Need ideas for painting a foyer wood floor

Liza Jane InteriorsJuly 10, 2013
I have a client that has a very tiny foyer (roughly 3x3) and would like to have the old wood painted. Need some ideas on colors, design, etc. The wall to the left is a stencil that can be painted over if need be. The wall to the right, behind door is another door leading into powder room. The stairs lead up to living area. All walls in home are painted a creamy yellow/tan. Thank you!

I just finished a back entry/laundry room for a client. We chose a roughed-up porcelain tile for the floors and then painted the stairs and risers the wood work color, high gloss for the treads, matte for the risers. In our case BM acadia white. Up the stairs a dark green (Neptune) Mohawk Smartstrand runner. Came out great.

judyg...thanks for responding. I wish I could put in tiles but they do not want to spend the money. Just paint at this point. I thought perhaps some stripes - using two rows for each color. The railings of the stairs are painted a brown/black. Thought perhaps I could paint two rows of wood floors the brown/black and two rows the white trim color? Thoughts?

That little 3 x 3' area offers a grand opportunity for painting a design on the floor. It could be as simple as a diagonal checkerboard, or the chevron design below. It could be zebra stripes or polka dots. Wallpaper designs can be a good source of inspiration.

On the landing, I would recommend a couple of good coats of primer, followed by BM CC-40. Ask your paint store for a good outdoor/deck paint. It will be hardier and stand up better to high traffic. On the risers and trim, use primer again and CC-40. I would keep the warmth of the natural wood on the steps/treads - perhaps just a fresh coat of semi-matte clear coat (anything too glossy may be slippery). Continue with a warm tone on the walls, and it will all tie in nicely.
