Can quartzite be used for a kitchen countertop/island? I love the light pastel colors.

What are pros and cons about quartzite vs. granite? I have a large 19'x21' kitchen with a 4x9 island. I have chosen antique brown granite for the countertops. I am thinking of getting plain glass for the backsplashes. Do you think a pale green quartzite countertop on the island would look OK? Does quartzite stain like marble? Does it need a lot of maintenance?

Quartzite is more durable than marble.

What are your cabinets? Do you have pics of the 2 counter materials?

Sam is correct. Quartzite is much more durable than marble. It has comparable characteristics to granite, which is why so many people are using it now in their kitchens. The only drawback I really see is its price point. It's typically more expensive than granite, and I would recommend using a fabricator that has experience with it. Some quartzites are so dense that they are hard on the tools used to cut and fabricate them.

As far as colors go, it would help to see pictures. Names of materials can sometimes be arbitrary, since they change from supplier to supplier.
