Can hardwood floors vary by room?

mpbsJuly 11, 2013
We are looking to put hardwood floors in all four bedrooms and hallway on our 2nd floor. My daughters want very light, almost white wood floors,. Would it be a mistake or look strange if the master bedroom and hall were oak, a different color and type of wood than the other rooms? Downstairs is oak.

I would keep with all oak. Maybe they could find a large area rug for their rooms that suits their style.

I Agee with @Westmanmarine Down the road for resale I think buyers will find that a drawback (if resale is an issue for you). I would imagine that You will have the house (or the proceeds) long after they move out on their own. I don't know how large the home is but. I think having all one hardwood really unites and enlarges the space. Area rugs are a great alternative. On the other hand if resale is not an issue and you have money to burn on another update when they move out or change their minds (hey some people do) then do what you (or your daughters) like and change it later if you don't love it.

Definitely agree with Duchess and Westmanmarine here. You want the home to look cohesive and although each room can be individualized to suit their tastes, the flooring should be the same. It will likely be a big resale issue.

Thanks for the advice! I never thought about the fact that one look might enlarge the space visually - that is an excellent point. Definitely sticking with all oak, thanks.
