New Orleans Style Decor Ideas

July 13, 2013 in Design Dilemma
Hi,

We're about to start building a house in French Country/Acadiana style and need decor help. We love the New Orleans style (deep reds and golds), however, not having much luck finding tasteful/practical decor ideas. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for the help!

Hello @sporster66 . You may already be familiar with the work of the late A. Hays Town, a Louisiana residential architect (this is a link to a good reference book with hundreds of color photos of the Acadian style homes he designed, including interior images and materials used - http://tinyurl.com/pdzh4cn ). Another good reference book, written by Bryan Batt, of New Orleans (also, actor in Mad Men), is Big, Easy Style ( http://tinyurl.com/qfwe4d8 ), filled with colorful interior images (with lots of deep reds and golds). He also is the owner of a local shop called Hazelnut, in New Orleans and now in Mandeville ( http://www.hazelnutneworleans.com/ ), where you might find inspiration and decor items. Also, regarding French Country decor, if you like decorative paint, whether on walls, floors, or furnishings, Lisa Rickert of New Orleans is the distributor for Annie Sloan's Chalk Paint, and this is the link to her website where you can search for a local retailer and how to purchase - http://www.anniesloanunfolded.com/ Hope this helps.

My ears perked up as I read "New Orleans". One of my most loved books is "New Orleans~Elegance and Decadence" by Randolph Delehanty with the most sumptuous photos by Richard Sexton. It is a must have and will inspire you, I know. I checked availability, as I purchased my copy IN New Orleans in 1996. A newer printing is out...available from many independent booksellers, as well as Barnes & Noble, Amazon, etc. You can probably access some of the pages on-line, as well. Seriously, I pick-up my copy constantly, studying the photos over and over.

Crystal chandeliers. I was down there last fall, and they were everywhere. Also, crystal bathroom lighting like this:

Love the photo in the above ideabook posted by Jeannie Nguyen, and recognized the chandelier above the table. It's by a local artisan, Julie Neill, who handcrafts fine lighting in her studio on Magazine Street in New Orleans - http://www.julieneill.com/ . Also, the image that @sstarr93 posted above of Blue Dog prints is by another well-known local artist, George Rodrigue, and he has studios and galleries in south Louisiana and California - http://georgerodrigue.com/

Yes, it's fun to visit the Rodrigue gallery in NOLA, but not as much fun to pay $75K for an original...;-) Prints are much more reasonable, fortunately.
