Need help with my bathroom(s). They are tiny and "stuck in the 70's"
July 20, 2013 in Design Dilemma
They are covered in "tiny tiles", have plastic dropped ceilings, and vanities and commodes that are designed for someone who is vertically challenged.

First try to figure out the reason for everything that was done, because the choices may be driven by something other than the previous owner's height. Know where all the piping is, for example. I say this from experience, because you can concoct a design of your dreams only to begin construction and realize that there was some reason things were done as they were, and that it made sense or will cost mega bucks to change. Just a suggestion.

While I would definitely check what is in those dropped ceilings, my guess is HVAC or plumbing, either of which a competent general contractor can reroute for you without too hefty of a fee. As for the vanities and commodes, I've often faced that problem in renovations - either they were installed with handicap access in mind (particularly the toilet) or height standards were different then. I would suggest changing them out for units that fit today's design standards - as long as the plumbing stays in the same place, the labor cost should be reasonable. Regarding the tiny tiles, I'd say either embrace them as part of the house's 'story' or investigate if they can be tiled over (only if it doesn't affect your door clearances) or easily removed.
