What gives a house a 1900 to1920s San Diego style.NOT Spanish!
July 21, 2013 in Design Dilemma
We wish to remodel our 1958/1968/1973/1985 home(all these changes have occurred over the years but all have been in the traditional English style). We would like to make the house resemble the elegant functional homes seen in San Diego in 20s as far styling and layouts are concerned. Eg.large Coronado or Mission Hills. Rooms flowed round a central core, use of distinctive woodwork throughout and simpler cabinetry in the kitchen and baths. I.e. not raised panel door cabinets and they seem to fit flush with the body of the cabinet. We would, of course, like to add touches that are relevant to 2013/2014 but are aiming for a renovation that will not date the house. We hope that, by stepping back into a totally different time, the house will avoid being pigeonholed. I would like suggestions as to cabinetry, moulding accents, kitchen and bath fixtures and color choices. This remodel is being done to allow us to age in place in this house (the Master Suite is now on the first floor and accessible to all basic living areas) and the plans,so far drawn up, are predicated on this and have the correct flow for a 20s house.
