Most flattering is a directional spotlight in line with the vanity unit, angled at the mirror with the light reflecting on your face and with two other lights on either side of the mirror.

Bathrooms need multiple types of light. First, you need ambient lighting to get coverage throughout the entire bathroom. Then consider installing some task lighting like scones around your mirror that will provide the light necessary for applying makeup. As you can see in this photo, the recessed canisters provide ambient lighting while the sconce gives off enough light for applying makeup under the mirror:
