Help with decor
July 24, 2013 in Design Dilemma
We have a boring living room with no sense of style. We need to make our home a home. Help, please.

Can you post a couple more pics of the room so that we can see all angles? You can attach images to a comment below.

While we're waiting for those additional pictures; adding a rug, art on your walls, a floor lamp or two, coffee table or a fabric ottoman and some side tables.... a bit of colour and softer textures.... that will make your house your home.

Right, so... I did take a look at your ideabook and I think you like a neutral colourscheme.
So, my suggestions may have been a bit too colourful for you.
Your photos are a bit dark so it is difficult to see the space. But your seating is too close together. I'm wondering if you have enough space to move the sofa away from the wall, towards the fireplace, and leave enough space to comfortably walk behind it. Then you can flank the fireplace with the chairs, angled towards the sofa. Or you can just pull the chairs away from the sofa and make the entire seating arrangement more spacious.

But again... adding different, softer textures will make your room feel cozier.

Hi There - I always find the best way to help a bare wall and add a LOT of style at the same time is some art. I know you said the room had "no style", and I think the ARTtwo50 app could help. If you have an iPad handy, you can download the app and browse through Original art that virtually hangs on your own wall. Then, you can compare pieces and get feedback to see what you like the best. you can find it at or the app store.

The comparison works like this (but in your own room and based on you and your space):

Try the sofa floating perpendicular to the FP on the window side and the two chairs facing it angled together at the French door side. Add a large area rug under them. If you like neutral, try a flokati. On the wall opposite the FP add a something to counter balance the FP - maybe a TV on the wall with a long credenza underneath.

Go with a more brighter color... Put some life into your family room. Do a little more organization, and add some wall decor-framing,etc.
