want to add an apartment above an existing garage....any suggestions?

the garage is 24 by 24 pole building and it was buit in late 70s. My main concern is how it will hold up with adding an addition on top. What type of beams should be placed across the top for support for flooring of the apartment. Any other ideas would be welcomed.

You should consult an architect and have them prepare detailed drawings. They will also be able to determine the zoning requirements for your town and their design will not only take into account structural issues but also other factors such as fire safety, insulation, mechanical & electrical.
