>< My apartment is tiny

navygrey5220July 31, 2013
I want an Indian/Bollywood feel in my living room, but it's very small. I don't want it to look fussy and overdone, but I love the richness of the fabrics. I also want to incorate that theme in my kitchen. It's total about 500sq feet.

Any tips?

Is it a studio or a one bedroom? Do you want this for the living room or bedroom too? What are you starting with - what kind of furniture do you own?

The site above is lovely and shows you what direction to take. If it's a small space you will want to keep your colours similar in strength as in the large photo so that there isn't a lot of contrast. You can use rich colours in a small space but keep the "contrast" down.

Hi, do you happen to have images of your living room? That way we can see the size of the space you are working with, the color scheme and layout of the room.

@Cristina Hopper; It's a one bedroom and I just want touches of this theme in my kitchen. All of my furniture will be tossed. It's all hand-me-downs from family members and lest just say their taste is not mine. lol

@Nicole Lee; I'm getting to the posting right now. Nobody laugh at my tiny space. It's our (fiance) first apartment. XD

I'd like to be able to fit in a small dining area, move the computer, and get a bookshelf. Our budget isn't large, but I'm handy and like diy projects.

If you want just touches, go with bollywood throw pillows for the living room on a solid color sofa.

@njmomma: This is awesomely helpful. Thank you. I want rich warm colors. Not dark though. I love jewel tones like red, burgundy, gold! But it should also be chic enough for my musician fiance. He has a more... rock god idea for the living room. >< Is it possible to blend these ideas?

I like chaises and throw pillows for the floor so there is sitting room for guests. I also hate our beige carpet. Should I get a rug?

How about painting the walls a saturated golden or wheat color, including the kitchen. Find a sofa that is in that the family too, but stay away from large roll arms and anything looking over stuffed. Then bring in extra seating and Bollywood with these poofs

and pillows and curtains like suggested by the previous poster.

Shop World Market or something like that for a low dark carved wood coffee table.

For the dining area you should take a look at colored (purple?) ghost chairs. This will give you seating without taking physical or visual real estate.
