Are white shaker cabinets prone to showing seams where the wood joins?
July 31, 2013 in Design Dilemma
I was looking at white shaker cabinets at the store and I noticed all the seams where each piece of wood was put together. I was told that all cabinets expand and contract year round and over time the seams are noticeable on white cabinets. Does anyone have any input or experience about this?

That's an accurate statement. However, if you have a conditioned home with A/C and humidification, the wood movement will be far less, not only for your cabinets but for your other furniture and woodwork throughout the house..

I can't stand the seams. I feel that they are an eyesore (at least to me). The cabinet maker said I could use MDF for the shaker style to prevent seeing the seams. Should I expect any issues using MDF? They say it will look the same.

You can use MDF however if they are in a kitchen I would have them double primed and then finished. If MDF gets moisture in it and swells you cannot repair it.

If the cabinet maker is cutting the frame out of one MDF panel, make sure the inside corners are square, not curved. Also, the doors will be much heavier than wood doors so be sure they use heavy duty hinges and will warranty the hinging from premature failure.
