Fireplace dilemma

I need help with this fireplace and the space above . I believe it's soapstone. My budget is $300 . I was thinking to buy a mantle shelf but I am not sure what size should be since the fireplace length is 49,5''. Thank you

I can picture a crisp white crown molded style shelf above that with a wall clock.
OR if you're willing to put a little elbow grease into a low-cost project, how about "faking" a larger hearth with something like these:
There are lots of ideas if you google something like "diy fireplace" or "mantel makeover".

A few 2x4's, one piece of drywall and some fence panels.

Only cost $200 bucks
