How can I make this kitchen a li'l modern

Manisha NarulaAugust 3, 2013
We are in the process of buying this house and I want to make some changes in the kitchen to give it a modern look - I am thinking of painting the cabinets (espresso ?) and change the knobs. Any suggestions on backsplash (low budget) ?

How about a charcoal gray for the cabinet color? Getting stainless steel oven and dishwasher would update the look as well. Can you show a close up photo of the counter?

Ouch, that's a lot of similar color wood to deal with...For the back splash...If you have the money, some glass tile would look nice. If you don't you could pop out some of the tiles in the color you don't like and have a different color/type put in it's place. It looks like you don't naturally get a good amount of light in the kitchen. I'd definitely go stainless with the double ovens. The Kitchen-Aid Architect II series rocks!I'd either do a stainless or black dishwasher, which would pull some of the black from the oven windows and cook top. the floor is too yellow for Charcoal grey. Find a local designer who can just to a color consultation. They can pull together what the wall color, tile and cabinets should be that will work with the floor.

You could find an espresso that works with the floor, it won't be totally black, but it will look better as will chrome knobs and pulls in a more streamlined look.

Agree with Emma.. that floor should be considered before you do anything. It is very, very yellow. Would you consider changing that.. not sure how expansive it is in house or if you like that look, but it in itself makes the total look very heavily traditional. Most modern floors are going darker these days, or if lighter, not the yellow colonial look. You can get very inexpensive glass tiles these days that look great at the big box stores. A horizontal one with mixed colors 9 once you sort our floor and cab issues) would really help to modernize. Hardware is the final step to achieve that look. Best of luck!

Please sand and Stan cabinets. Expresso will give you a modern look brush nickel long pulls on cabinets instead of knobs. Floors are fine. Use stainless as accents.

You could also go nothing on those very nice windows. Great view.

On second thought. I think painting the cabinets white would look great with the wood floors. And, new hardware.

Depending on how low your budget is I'd consider painting the lower cabinets white, espresso stain for upper cabinets, brushed nickel pulls, glass tiles as back splash. You'll save a lot if you keep existing appliances. Break up all the wood flooring by adding a rug in the center that will bring the window treatments and back splash together.

Check out our recent project with similar color scheme.
