Which recessed lighting should I use in my kitchen wide beam or direct
August 4, 2013 in Design Dilemma
Advise please! Am remodeling my kitchen (took down 2 walls) & have been looking at recessed LED lighting. There is lensed lighting which gives a wide soft beam or baffled lighting which gives a straight down/direct light. The island (8 1/2') will have 3 pendant lights. The kitchen is 11' x 20' and the recessed & pendants will be my only lighting. The kitchen is open to dining & living room. Thank you so very much!

When we remodeled out kitchen my mistake was 6" can lights in the center of the room. I'd recommend smaller "cans" closer to the "task" above your counters and slightly off from the cabinets. The lights will accents your cabinets and help with task lighting. Be sure to install under cabinets lighting. For yout pendants, I tried to center with the peninsula but the "beans" didn't cooperate, but it was close. :)

Thanks for your advise! What I don't know is whether the 4"recessed lights should have a wide soft beam or light directly straight down.

Use "floods" so you get as wide a beam as possible. Ideally your lights will be in a row shining down on the countertop and there should be enough of them that there is uniform light--no dark gaps. If you take your kitchen plan to a good lighting store, they should be able to help you decide how many lights you'll need. An experienced residential electrician can also advise you.
