Do I have to have a chandelier over dinning room table?

pupinAugust 6, 2013
We remodeled and moved into the house one week ago. To our dismay, the dinning room table could not be placed centered under the chandelier as it looked extremely crowded on one side of the room and empty on the other. We have plenty of light (4 can lights) and even though chandeliers limit furniture location, it would be nice to have one. Removing it and patching the hole would be an option, making another hole in a different location is not because it would not be centered with the can lights. In advance, thenk you for your suggestions/comments. I placed the candle holder in the center of the table to better show the problem.

once you move the boxes and clutter out of that corner, you may be able to then center the table.

i'd finish unpacking before being bothered by final furniture placements.

I hung a candelabra over the center of my dining room table, but I had track lighting not cans. I used a scale drawing and a piece of string cut to size to figure out where the track lights should go to balance the room. I also had 3 sets of track lighting as the dining room kitchens and an old hallway became one room in my kitchen reno.

It appears you are trying to center the table on the hutch, but first do as suggested by yobo and see how it really looks. Then realize that patching the chandelier hole and removing the wiring would be not much different in cost than moving the chandelier and two recessed lights and patching 3 holes. It is the same number of 1 hour min. trips per professional either way, so get what you want.

Get rid of the boxes and move your table under the fixture. Your wall unit doesn't have to be centered
with the table. It can be a little off centre.

Perhaps you could swag it. That would allow you to keep the box where it is on the ceiling, but put the light wherever you want.

Definitely keep the lighting above the table for resale value. I like the idea above. There are many fixtures that you can get that will soothe that off-balance look.

I agree that the table could be moved under the light if the boxes were out of there. It looks odd that the table has that much space on the window side and the chair on the other side is almost into the "hall" or next room.
