I'm not sure what the finish is here...but I like to use Farrow and Ball's "Pointing" and Benjamin Moore's "White Dove". Neither are too stark. As for type of finish - most cabinets are factory-finished and therefore have a lacquered finish that's quite hard and smooth. I've done a few projects where we hand painted the cabinets, but this is typically more expensive and only available with custom, plus you have to be careful about sheen. You want something that will clean up well, so not too matte.
