Rug Selection

August 15, 2013 in Design Dilemma
I am redoing a nice bright sunny room into my home office. I have selected and painted wall colors and am re-using existing black furniture - it is distressed with red highlights. I was initially thinking in terms of a vibrant orange/rust rug to complete the effect... I'm going for vibrant and energizing and somewhat fun.

Hi! Are you painting your walls the purple and grey-green color as shown in your photo?

yep - already done... the teal is the exact color. the purple is a little happier than the color here but it is pretty close. there is a chair rail that is a soft white

Would you consider vintage or antique to go with the cabinet?

I like the one in the middle! And it is in keeping with many of the others in the house! the room is about 12'x13.5' so I was looking for a larger rug... maybe a 7.5'x9.5' ish... that would sit in the middle of the room and my desk would be on top of it. I don't own the desk yet of course but there you have it!

decided I didn't like this rug but the layout as I envisioned it is something like this... with a different desk. I may go antique desk... to the right is a triple window so I was going to float the desk and maybe add a bookcase or something behind it on the wall

How about this? First one is 7 x 10 .
2,3 are custom made and the size can be adjusted to clients needs.
You may like to check my website for more info.
Thanks

Since your furniture is distressed, I would go with something more antique for the rug. I like the second one above.

Flor is a company that sells cool carpet squares in a wide choice of colors and patterns. You can check them out online or perhaps there's a store near you. One opened here in Austin recently. Here's an example of the sort of thing you can do with Flor squares.

Unfortunately that is too small. I like that rug though!

Dorota thank you. You have inspired me to look for something more in my usual style with the right colors. I think I may ultimately have regretted a more modern looking choice.

@michee627, If you say that rug is too small, then I did not explain very well the concept of carpet tiles. It's up to the buyer to buy as many carpet tiles as they need to make the rug the size they want. They come in solid colors and in patterns, in traditional looks, and more contemporary ones too.

Here's a link to some in Australia: http://www.infolink.com.au/c/InterfaceFLOR-Australia/New-Carpet-Tile-Collection-from-InterfaceFLOR-Australia-n903420

FLOR is great. I have their tiles throughout the house. Like Carolyn said, you can make your rug however you want. Size and colors are up to you. They are great for the office; easy to clean and maintain.

If you like the look of antique rugs, they can be also custom made. Example: I just got this one, nr1 for my client. She picked the size, colors and design. Picture nr2 is a progress photography of how is being done. Nr3 is just an idea.
It takes up to 75 days to complete the production.

@Dorota, where are this rugs made? How much per sq. foot for a custom rug? Thanks!

@printesa
They are hand knotted in Turkey with top quality wool and all natural dyes. The cost per sq.food is roughly $550.
You are welcome to contact me through my website if you want any specific information or would like to see more samples .
Most of the rugs on the website are unique, antique and vintage pieces.

@dorota - so a 7x9 rug would be about $4500 custom?

@all what I liked about the middle picture was the traditional pattern combined with the vibrant colors and no beige... any other suggestions? I'd like to keep cost down quite a bit more than what a high end rug typically costs (but of course I like the high end rugs!) I'm afraid the squares will come off modern no matter what I do design wise

Thanks Dorota! Just to make sure I don't misunderstand, it is $500 per square meter? If it were per square foot, then a 7x9 would be around $34,000

Sorry, it was misprint. It is $55 per sq foot which is 63 x $55 = $3465. I'm not that expensive!.

what do you all think about this? Is it just going to blend right in with the red oak flooring and disappear?

Yes, that rug will disappear against red oak flooring. I like to take several rugs to a client's home to see how they work in the room, so I would certainly not be ordering a custom rug where there is NO return after a long wait. I guess in that way I have joined the instant gratification generation. You said you wanted something vibrant and fun. The rug above is not either of those things, though it is indeed a lovely rug.

Just ordered this one - hopefully it will fit the bill. Got an amazing desk from a family friend - a cool antique with this "drawer" that pulls out and was designed for the old metal manual typewriters... which I actually have one! hoping to get a bunch of furniture shifted around and stuff staged this week.

It's looking great! I love the big "sunflower" leaning against the desk and the shawl draped over the desk edge! Very artistic!
