What are my colors?
Blue
August 17, 2013 in Design Dilemma
I've heard about the 60 30 10 rule but I don't know what my colors are. I'm going to paint the walls some sort of beige or grey neutral (not sure yet). If so, does that become my main color? My couch and the floating media cabinet are both black. Does black count as a secondary color? Then I also have the eggplant/burgundy chair, which is the same color in the rug. Is that the accent color? Do I get to use another accent color to brighten things up? All art will move, so ignore the art placement for now.

The beige looks to be the dominating color if you decide to paint the walls.

Thanks dy. I forgot about the other color in the rug. It is sort of grey. I can't tell whether it is blu-grey or green-gray. Is there an easy trick to determine undertones for those of us who are color-challenged?

Eggplant is accent color. Also black, n gray. I would only use the eggplant and put that in other shades of that color in pillows and art. You need to lower any art you put there. 5-6" above furn. Try a big 45" sunburst mirror, use art on another wall.

Try running rug the other way.

Oh I don't think it would work. Rug is too long for room. A round 36" coffee table would be more to scale do it in dark wood.

I would love a gray for these walls and agree THAT would be your main color.

Agree. I think either a beige or a grey. I like that Alexandria beige. Not sure my room can handle that - it's a smallish room and can look closed in.

I think the gray on the walls will work with the rug, which I love, by the way!

Thanks baby jean! That gray is a tricky color. Everyone who comes in sees it differently. Some people swear it is a blue gray and others swear it is a green gray. I thought it was blue until I started putting blue accents near it. Now it think its green.

Travis- you are right, the rug doesn't work the other way. There is a stair landing that cordons off the "room".

What are your thoughts on BM Rock harbor violet?
(because I think beige is too much for this room)

Try SW's Green Earth - a bit gray but not entirely.

I love what you've done with your rug. Don't be tempted to get a smaller one. That will only break up a not so large room in even smaller pieces. Nice rug too.
I'd bring in more of the eggplant colour, even if in different shades. So the chair has a 'reason' to be that colour if you know what I mean. It needs some small touches of the same colour dotted around the room.

Carolins, I didn't realize I could use the accent in different shades. Good idea! Do you think pillows, tchotchkes, or artwork? How do I pull more accent pieces in? I'm also looking for one more chair for that room. Do I go for the eggplant again? Or is that too matcha-matcha?

How about light grey for the other chair? Is the beige (?) one in the foreground leaving?
Or... do I see turquoise in the paintings above the sofa? If so...
I wouldn't go overboard with adding pillows. Keep it simple. But art is a good way to introduce a bit more colour.

Don't put chairs right together. Then you can do a black, gray eggplant print. In new one.

Genevieve I love turquoise Should I introduce another bold color so prominently? I am not sure what that would do to my color proportions. Love the beige color too

The behind the sofa wall is actually a shared wall in the open living/dining/kitchen so I think that one needs to stay neutral.

I actually think that rinqreation's suggestion of the very subtle purple for your walls is a really good one (and not because she said the peacock pillow is cute ;-)). But it will look nice and fresh.

And if I were you, I'd forget about the 60-30-10 rule. Rules are there to be broken. Just do what feels good to you. Be relaxed about it. I think you're doing great so far, love the rug and the purple chair.
