Old wood Paneling
August 18, 2013 in Design Dilemma
I have old dark wood panels in my home. I would like to keep, but need to lighten the room up. Do not want to paint over but is there a way to lighten the wood? thanks

This is a bit radical but I feel it would replicate current trends and be beautiful. Lightly sand down the paneling until the overall colour is gone. Since all stain is drawn deep into the wood this should expose a layer of wood that has stain embedded in the more obvious grains. Now you can apply a soft grey translucent (not solid) stain which will give a modern yet classic feel and lighten up the room. Warning- this may not be a DIY project especially if you have never done this type of work before.
