A few cans of paint, lighter carpeting and new window treatments will make a HUGE difference. Easy fixes.

The room looks narrow; i would remove any furniture that is behind the chairs. Lighten up the wall color, OR keep the top half (red), and paint it white on the bottom half and put a light colored rug on. What is the floor under the rug? you don't have to have carpeting in a dining room. You can put inexpensive wood flooring. I saw a nice black bamboo flooring at Home Depot today that could look really nice - -

You have very heavy furniture in the space and going lighter with the walls and floor will help make it seem bigger. I would suggest testing paint samples on the wall to see how they read in the room.

How about wainscoting with (grasscloth) wallpaper above. Lots of examples if you follow the link: http://www.houzz.com/photos/traditional/dining/wainscoting-grasscloth-

No wonder you hate it. Sorry. Do you stick to this style?

I would try window panels that go all the way to the floor. Would you consider moving the large picture with the gold frame above the buffet. It doesn't seem to be centered above anything in its current space. Clear everything from the buffet and we can start rearranging that later.

Start with picking out some wallpaper. Then choose paint colors, curtains, and carpet based on those in the wallpaper.

I think a dark grey wall with white trims and a lighter grey carpet will brighten teh space while still keeping a sophisticated look. I chose this room as inspiration because you do only have one window. as far as curtains, a grey and white print can look cute and on't overpower the one small natural light source

any help on my own room would be greatly appreciated: http://www.houzz.com/discussions/613796/Need-help-for-my-room-

Hope I helped!
