I have a cedar constructed beam that I'm going to mount on my kitchen ceiling. I'd like for this beam to look rustic and country. Any suggestions on how to distress it before I stain it are appreciated!!!! Also, I have read to use a hatchet to shape the corners but I'm concerned because the beam is mitered together. I don't want to somehow break it apart. Any alternative without using heavy machinery? Thank you SO much!!!!!

You can beat it with a chain, hammer basically anything that will beat it up: I found this perhaps you will find it handy: http://homeguides.sfgate.com/distress-beam-32329.html

take out your rage on it!

i mean beat it up.
hit it with a hammer, both the face and the claw.
smack it with chains, rub it with a rasp on the edges, poke it with chisels, use a wood scraper and let it skip to make lines.

have fun!
