Flooring Dilemma

We are updating a home built in the early 60's. Original brick floors are in poor condition, damaged by water and carpet glue. Any suggestions for possible restoration (removing the years of carpet glue without ruining the brick)? If not, can we tile over the brick or lay wood over the brick?

Try paint thinner on a very small area and see if that will soften the glue.

Try calling a local floor pro (or two) in for an opinion. Much depends on just how crumbly the bricks are. There are probably several solutions which may be easier than you'd think now.
