Dining Room chair opinion please, please
mkrittAugust 23, 2013
Hi, this is our teeny, tiny dining room. It measures 8 x 12. I don't mind that it's small, actually the only space that seems to remain clean all the time :) and we only eat in there on holidays. I have it in my head (after going on a homes tour) that I would like to have these Jackson Metal Tub Chairs from World Market instead of the chairs I currently have. I found one on Craigslist and bought it to see. I would like four and then replace the end two with some other type chair. Today I looked on Craigslist and found more (jumping up with joy) at a really good price. Please give me your opinion on what you think they would look like. (The curtain rod needs to be moved in, thought I would like it wider, didn't).

I have a pic of the chairs in my dining room ideabook, but being a computer illiterate, I can't figure out how to get it in my comments. I know how I'm supposed to but it doesn't seem to work :(

Thank you for any imput!

Possibly chairs like this for your kitchen? look to be chrome legs and leather seats. A compromise with husband.

Home again, home again!!

@bethcs, I understand the no sleeping part! I was hoping to get a good night's rest at my mom's, with not sharing a bed with large puppy Ty and snuggler Sammy. Guess I underestimated the power of a paw in my face and sweet kisses (puppy, not husband haha) more then I thought :) Glad to have brightened your morning! I think I agree about the endtables, as much as I like them, I'm not sure about them either. This IS so much fun!

Went by the Home Decorators store; they didn't have the rug, but I was able to look at the barstools and I was kind of disappointed. I would really like them to be more metally (?) looking I guess. I did get a catalog that I can't wait to look at!

CDR I like those barstools a lot. I actually have some like that pinned on Pinterest (this I do remember). Going to look at fabric tomorrow!!

Tom got about 1/4 of the sunroom floor done while I was gone. Once he gets done, maybe you all can help me tie some things together. Warning...here's a bit of our conversation..
At the store:
ME: That's looks redder then the display.
TOM: I think it's the lighting.
ME: (seeing it outside in the truck) I think it looks pretty red.
TOM: I still think it's the lighting.
ME: (once we have it unloaded in the sunroom) It's red.
TOM: Stand here in the great room, it doesn't look so red.

(It does..and by the way it's called "russet" oak!)

sigh

Mkritt glad you made it home safe and sound. Hope your mom is doing better.
I think I have had that same conversation with my hubby, TODAY! Exchange red for gray and it is almost word for word the same conversation!
So many rugs out there that will work great in the room. You need to try a few out in the room and TY will have a great alternative to the end table!

Can you order the rug from Home Decorators and take it back if you don't like it? Did they have any there at HD that you liked?

Good luck on your fabric hunt and hope your mom is doing better.

Thank you Margaret and CDR. She is doing better, and my sister is coming for an extended stay with her until we're sure she is 100%.

Margaret I think our husbands have read the same manual for sure!!.

I'm headed back to my mom's on Saturday, so I'm going to go by HD again and see if I can return it there if it doesn't work. They had a couple that I liked before I saw the Granada :) Now they pale in comparison. I didn't know that it was a company of Home Depot.

Taking my two-year old grandson James with me tomorrow..he won't be much help picking out fabric..he agrees with everything his YaYa says haha!!

Have you thought of using black leather parsons chairs? They have a fairly slim profile and are very easy to clean. We've had our for several years and so far they've held up with all the grandkids:=) Or maybe just use two of them with one at each end...

Well, just as I suspected, Jamers was no help at all today with fabric shopping. If he had his way the dining room chairs would be covered with John Deere.

Sadly, I saw a couple of fabrics that had the colors I love, but the pattern was not right. That was at JoAnn's. Going to try Hancock's next.

Really like the thought of different chairs all together with more texture to them, like the woven ones.

Onward and upward!!

Pier One has quite a few dining chairs. You might want to take a look. I am not really sure what you are looking for in a dining chair. You are not sure yourself. Right?

Yes, the only thing I'm sure of is I'm not sure. I do like all the chairs from Pier One. I like the idea of the first one with two end chairs and chair pads to match (is that okay, or too country?).

I am going to my mom's again tomorrow; after I leave I am heading to some of the awesome stores across the state line, just a few minutes from her house, that I've been wanting to go to.

I went back to your ideabook and I think the Daisy chairs are not right for you. From looking at your idea book, I think you want more clean lines and simplicity.

So, don't be afraid to tell us you don't like something.

I really think you could do a lot in the dining room by keeping existing chairs with new fabric. I would save your $ and get a new light fixture, a really awesome centerpiece and maybe some new artwork.

I was thinking more along the idea of two matching end chairs with chair pads on the others rather than those actual chairs. I really, really like the woven chairs if I were to change the whole chair.

What kind of light fixture were you thinking?

I have a confession to make on the artwork. I really only like funny, rather quirky ones that make me smile when I look at them. Like my diving pig...and the ones in the foyer are poker and pool playing dogs (nicely framed) that look like four of my beloved dogs :-)

Just my opinion....I really think your dining room would look better with 3 chairs on each side, rather than having end chairs. But, it has to be something you like.

What are your pictures of in the dining room? Maybe your centerpiece could play off that.

The light fixture you have now is okay, but if you really want to change things up, new light fixture would have big impact. It would be wise to change the kitchen ones at the same time. They don't all have to match, but should tie-in.

You seem to like the lantern-style. That would be nice in a long, narrow fixture in the dining room.

This is turning out to be a really lousy couple of weeks. Made the painful decision to put our beloved Bailey to sleep today. He had been losing weight for the last four years, had every test run on him imaginable..our vet's anomaly. The last couple of days he could not stand. I made him homemade food when he wouldn't eat commercial. He was my rock after we lost our daughter Courtney; never left my side, had to always be facing me. She called him "the Brat". Pretty sure he's with her now..hope he likes the ocean.

Thank you all for the well wishes. Bailey was actually a boy; everyone (even the vet) always called him a she. He was a huge part of our lives for 14 years and I wouldn't trade a minute of it (even when he was being his stubborn, bossy self). Margaret, that's exactly what my little 4-yr old granddaughter Gracie said, "Bailey will always be in our hearts, right YaYa?"

mkritt, ironically, my sister's dog, Cocoa passed away yesterday. It must have been doggie heaven day. One of my other sisters sent a poem. (Will not win a pulitzer prize, but expresses how we feel about our dogs).

God saw that he was getting tired,
and his stay was not to be.
So He put His arms around him
and whispered,” Come with Me.”
With tearful eyes we watched him
slowly fade away.
Although we loved him dearly,
we could not make him stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
playful paws were put to rest.
God took him only to prove to us,
He only takes the best.

Sorry about Bailey, that is hard.

I started in reading this thread and didnt realize this was a novella, no time to read all, so excuse me if it has all been said. I would forget about the fabric for chairs, will barely be seen since not the backs. You want something unexpected, right. find some great art in the proper large scale and a large drum shade, or maybe rectangle. and RUGS, both rooms look completely unanchored- and that could lighten thngs up too. Lighting makes an amazing difference in any room. You have nice furniture choices, you just want to make it stand out and i think the accessories are really a miss. Love the pig, and that he is meaningful to you! you just needed something with. Does he fit on the fireplace mantel?
You have a lovely home that looks quality, seems like you could hire a stager or design consultant for a couple hours for ideas would be best time + money spent, then you would know the scale of what to look for. And give you family and dog time! Ps, i am a great craigslist shopper, love the find and the price. But bad decisions can cost more time, money in the end. Been there, done that.

Cdr, that was beautiful, thank you.

@myxanadu, thank you for the compliments, you are right, I do like the unexpected. I like accessories that give me pleasure to look at them, not because they match the decor, Almost everything has a story; but as you mention, the key is making it go together and not look like a mishmash. And YES rugs!! I swear I look at them everyday, on Houzz, on different websites, CDR found some really great ones that I like. Definitely want to work on the lighting, because as so many have pointed out, that will make a big impact.

The homes tour is getting ready to start here in a couple of weeks; if I find decor I really like I will have to contact the stager. Last Spring had some awesome interiors (where I fell in love with the Jackson Metal Tub chairs..sigh).

And I've been there, done that too, you are so spot on there!! Thank you for the great ideas.

I used to love changing up my house, but have discovered lately that I would just like to finally settle down and wake up in the morning and go "ahhhhh done."

@CDR have you seen those burlap chairs at Target? Would they work for end chairs if I decide to just do those. I have done three chairs on each side, trying that for a few days. Hard to get a feel yet because I have a loveseat and other chair pushed against them from the sunroom while that floor is getting done.

And how about this rug, could it work with a touch of the industrial I want, now with the barstools :-) Pretty eclectic all together, but I can sort of picture it. Also saw a bench that I liked in place of the ottomans I stuck there.

Oh and the pictures in the dining room are just some wrapping paper I got at Papyrus and framed. Still need to move them next to each other and maybe try a mirror on the other side like you suggested also.

Wish I could just blink like Jeannie and bring you here!!

Have not seen the chairs at Target in person.

When the mighty little one gets a chance, can she take a photo of dining room chairs 3 on one side/3 on the other?

Rug: colors work. Very traditional. Can still work with industrial chairs. Is it for dining room or living room?

Okay....I looked at your idea book, trying to figure out what you like. You are like myself: there is no decor style I do not like (well, maybe a few). This is a blessing and a curse. So, lets' just call you eclectic. Is that fair?

Restart: I think you might be better off focusing on one room at a time. Still, we can keep other rooms in mind, right? Dining room is easiest.

So, your rooms are painted an earthy green and you have an accent of orange (fireplace). Are you happy with those colors and can we use them as a starting point?

What other colors do you have in this very open area?

Are there any other colors you want to add? (try to keep total colors to 3)

What you could consider doing is have the 3 colors, but emphasize one as a dominant color in each area.

You know I was just thinking about my post and a memory crossed my mind.
I had a yellow lab named Sammy, she made the dog in Marly and Me look like an angel. Sammy passed last year at 14. She got into everything, dug holes everywhere, ate my shoes, chewed on everything, she loved to stream the toilet paper all over the house and chased everything that dared to walk in our yard. One day I realized it was very quiet, Sammy was nowhere do be found. I had a very snooty neighbor that was definitely not a dog lover. I went into the backyard and as soon as I opened the door there was my neighbor Barb and she started yelling at me about my disgusting dog. I had no idea what she was talking about until I saw the empty box of Tampax. Then I saw cotton was all over the backyard, empty wrappers everywhere and Sammy running around with Tampax dangling out her mouth. I just saw that image in my mind of dorky Sammy and the Tampax and had to share.

LOL!! I love the Sammy story!!! Sounds like she found the home that loved her regardless of her "Marley" ways :-) Ty is also a TP lover...I am laughing because just tonight he "got" another one..forgot to shut the bathroom door..good thing he's so "stinkin' cute" because it was all over the house!! I am a life long dog nut also...really just an animal nut.

CDR I think I am definitely eclectic. Sometimes I wish I had a dozen homes to use every style I like! The walls are called Cargo Pants by SW. The rug would be for the Great Room (can I use it for both)? I am finding I really like the "calm" colors with maybe just a touch of a stronger color.

I'm thinking it's time to start getting things and seeing how they work..my imagination only goes so far.

Okay, so rug for great room, some musings and some questions, so we can help you best.

nothing wrong with a busy rug, but it limits your choices for other things and you may grow tired of it. If you are on a limited budget and you like to change things up often, I encourage people to go plainer on the big stuff. You can always change pillows and decor relatively inexpensively.

On the other hand, if you love the rug, buy it.

-what size are you thinking? large enough to extend under front legs of couches? large enough to extend so that all 4 legs of both couches sit on carpet? Or, even larger, so that a piece of furniture in the corner by the window also sits on the carpet?

-what is the material and will you like the feel of it?

-do you definitely want a busy rug or are you open to other options?

CDR, question for you. When you say stay plain on the larger items does that include chairs as well? The reason I ask is I am a serial redecorator like Mkritt. I have been fiddling with my living room for years and have never quite gotten a look I like for more than a few weeks, I bought some chairs years ago with a strong pattern and have been toying with reupholstering in a linen look fabric. Couch is same color as Mkritt's, two leather club chairs (soon to be one). I personally think the hardest thing for non-pros is getting the final layer of the room right with accessories, always hard to get the right scale and balance. Neutral rooms can look very blah if the accessories don't do their job. So going with a neutral base makes sense, but sometimes it is easier to get the Wow from something big.

I think it depends on a lot of things. Some people like a more neutral pallette anyway. I do like the idea of having one "wow" piece. The problem some people get in is they have too many wow pieces.

The phrase I repeat over and over is "When too much is going on, nothing is going on." You end up with bohemian.

The rug that mkritt chose above to me is busy, but very traditional. So, it personally does not wow me as anything different. But, I do not live in the house. Mkritt, if you love that rug, buy it. I would rather see something like a zebra stripe.

The key that most people miss is a room is texture. That is where you get your richness.

1st one is to me too bohemian. Green couch and busy rug and blue wall. If they want to change, they will have to change a lot.

[houzz=Casa de Cocinas]

2nd one, not a lot of color, except maybe the rug. Gorgeous room, though. Key: texture.

houzz=Living Room]

3rd one, plain pallette, but they added color. They could add even stronger colors if they want. Next year, the same room could be done in bold reds and yellows and still work.

Margaret, you say your chairs have a strong fabric. Is it the color? Do you like the color? If not, easy answer....you will have to change the color. This is what I mean.

It is really based upon

-how often you like to change things up and
-your budget

So, if you like that velvet red couch and know you will tire of it in a year and want a chartruese couch and you have the time and money to redecorate, buy the red velvet couch. See what I mean?

Ok so I think you just confirmed what I was thinking, the third room is where I want to be. Seems to provide the foundation to simply change the pillows and the room becomes transformed. To me the large furniture is classic, not trendy in any way and trends can be brought in other elements, Thanks for the visuals, it really does help.

Margaret, your questions do help, we seem a lot alike (so much of it revolves around the dogs) :-) My sofas work out well too. They wipe down easily, and the cushion covers go in the wash. Lab hair has such a way of working itself into the fabric (my Nicki is lab). I'd like to know more about krypton too.

CDR great choices for showing different perspectives: #1 not at all, it's too busy and bright and I can see where you would be really stuck with that; I like looking at #2, but it doesn't look like a comfortable place to me.

I LOVE #3, And I see where it could be changed up often with just a few tweaks like pillows. But part of me feels like I've had it a bit like that for a while with my plain rug and sofas. Granted I haven't had pillows to speak of yet, so that would be a good inexpensive start. (Love the front door too, and it confirms that having a stained door will look fine!)

I don't want a big rug maybe 8 x 10. Just for under the sofas. I like showing most of my hardwoods. I keep scrolling up to look at #3; it is the calming colors I really like. I saw a couple of chairs like that at a consignment store yesterday, thought they looked more like office chairs until I see them in this room and love them.

Thank CDR you again have given me a lot to think about.

Mkritt, I think CDR nailed it! The rug would look incredible in your room and give you the touch of funky you are looking for and still be very elegant. The horse picture is large enough to make a statement over your fireplace mantle.

Okay, so in conclusion

-you want a neutral palette (you already have that---great!!)
-I am thinking you are saying, though, you might want one bling item---that could be your rug
-then add colors and texture with pillows and art

Do we have that right?
Please confirm/correct and now we know where to go.

Mkritt I have a microfiber couch from Potterybarn, has been so easy to maintain with the dogs. I have been researching upholstery fabric for my chairs or more appropriately the dog's chairs for months. I will pass along what the cost is as soon as I get hold of the upholstery guy. Attaching pics of Lilly and Issy hanging out on the bench in the pool yesterday, got quite warm so they decided chill in the pool.

Margaret, I think that's what my sofas are too. They are over 4 years old and still look great. Lilly and Issy are beautiful! I love your yard too! Wish we had a pool rather then ponds haha; would definitely keep me saner sometimes. Though only Ty gets in and only if we walk around them..he won't leave my side long enough to swim on his own.

Mkritt we have a pond too, but the dogs don't have direct access due to the fence. They don't leave my side much, I can occasionally get them to play outside but not for long periods. They actually knock on the door when they want back in!

I am loving the ideas CDR presented, I maybe stealing a few from you! Shhh don't tell.

I like the Plato too; but the more I think about it...living in the country with four dogs frightens me.. light color, snow, rain, 16 paws..yikes

Home Decorators also has some in their patio collection that I like and would probably be more practical in theory..as I'm pretty sure I will always share my home with lots of four-legged friends.

I really, really, still like that Grenada rug you found the best still. Which I suppose sums up that I would like to have more pattern in the rug the more I think about it. Well there's sort of a decision I suppose.

Thank you so much CDR!

Can you tell I am anxious for you to get going on this project? Okay, I called Home dec.

.800.245.2217

You can have shipped to your home (shipping fee)
You can return to them through ups (shipping fee) or you can call a store and ask if they have room(she said almost always they do) and they will take it with no shipping fee.

However, to avoid shipping fees totally you can:

If you call a store or go into a store (you are ordering through the store), the item will be shipped to the store, where you can pick it up. (no shipping fee)

If you want to return, you can return the item to the store (of course no shipping fee).

So, since you have a home decorators near your Mom, I think it is worth a try.

And hey, I'm fun :-), the only time I'm sophisticated or classy anymore is at my husband's Christmas party and that's before a couple of glasses of wine haha!

I also like the stripe and the colors in it. So I think I've narrowed it down to those two..with the Granada the leading contender...making progress :)

I also like the chairs you have now, if anything a smaller, round table might help with the space issue. Also, to make the room feel and look larger, put in faux wood blinds, and get rid of the drapes. Maybe they could be used in another room. Drapes that long are usually used in much larger rooms, I think.

CDR I wondered about the dining room also. Since ordering and returning is so easy with the store being close by, I think that's a great idea..adding it to my board.

@Karen, the room is small, but I don't need anything in there but the table, so I'm okay with that. I like the idea of wood blinds, especially in the adjoining room where the cabinets are so close to the drapes. Thank you for your ideas.

Hi. Would you mind

-moving the drapes in the dining room toward the edges of the walls. (look odd drawn away from the edges as they are)
-taking a photo of 3 chairs on each side (I know you had furniture there)
-taking a photo of credenza that was under tv now centered under cathedral ceiling (from a distance

finally, do you want to try a chair in the corner of the living room by the window?

Hello!

Here is a photo of the dining room chairs, and the pictures in there put together. They look like a patchwork quilt in the picture, but in person they don't.

Also a photo of the credenza (took standing on the sofa, not recommended!) The other one is from the side.

I am not too concerned with pictures for the wall and accessories right now, that's the fun stuff..looking for the unique.

Maybe an accent chair for the corner?

Thanks, Mary Kay. More progress!!!

-3 chairs on each side: love it!! Gives a cleaner look and feels like larger space

-2 pictures together in dining room-looks great!---maybe a different frame, depending on what you put on opposite wall. I would recommend a mirror

-drapes. The rod needs to be lowered so that drapes are not in front of the crown molding and not competing with the corner molding. They rod should be extended out, so that drapes can extend to the ends of the wall. You might want to buy rods with a return. (they wrap around and there is no finial on the end).

credenza area recommendations:

-put lamps on both sides of tv
-art on right side of tv- I would remove for now. We will have to see what we decide for left side.
-ledge on top of tv-remove
-chair----do you want to put a chair there? Would there be enough for 2 along the window or one large one?
-in peak of ceiling---large piece of circular art---not sure what----something like a starburst.
-paint the vent

what are the boxes to the left of the tv?

If you have the funds, it would be ideal to have a large piece to house the tv and anchor the very large wall. Do you have a hutch for that credenza?

Otherwise, we can make it work.

I never thought about lowering the drapes in the dining room, but now that I keep looking at them, that is a really good call!!

I'm still undecided about whether we're keeping the TV in there; now that the sunroom floor is done, I'm trying to decide whether to put it out there and getting a small one for the kitchen area. But if it does stay, it will be hung on the wall.

Hoping to get the sunroom put back together this weekend, and get Tom to give me an answer on the TV..love him, but sometimes it's like pulling teeth...our agendas are never the same haha!

Not sure about the chair. Except for possibly Lily (cat) it would never be used. Thinking maybe wait and get the rug and ottomans or bench and see?

If I have both lamps on the credenza, will it look alright to have a smaller lamp on an endtable next to the sofa? That side of the room needs light. We plan to get a new ceiling fan with lighting in it, but not a fan of overhead lighting.

Painting the vent..easy..and will make my friend very happy!

We can work with what you have on cathedral wall. Big lamps will help. However, I really feel you would be better off with a large piece on that wall. Now your tv is anchoring the wall, which is really not what you want. You want Biiiiiig!

@bevballew, the shelf doesn't have to stay. I thought it helped balance the lamps way back when the credenza was down towards the window and I had both lamps on it. I would rather not have much (any) shelving, I don't like the idea of having to find things to put on them...although my mom would probably have a few tchotchkes I could use..NOOOOO

And I still like the room in this photo

Here is the big issue: you have that huge wall which needs to be filled. Your instincts told you that it should be filled. So, instead of placing a large bookcase enterntainment center there, you filled it with__________ (I will let you fill in the blank).

Well Ty, Sammy, and I just sat on the couch for a few minutes staring at that wall. I don't have a large buffet anywhere. We do have a big entertainment center in the basement that I used to love, but not anymore. What would it look like if we put up the waincoting on that wall like in the DR and foyer.

At one time I had a rendering of this room where I put crown molding up at the eight foot mark going around the room like in CDR's picture that I like so much (and where I got the idea). Actually thought it looked pretty good at least in my drawing.

Before we knocked the wall down between the kitchen and this room we had two huge walls!

I like the simplicity of the credenza (still wish someone would suggest I paint it haha), with maybe some fun artwork. I like gallery walls (like Margaret B's).

I will have to look more on here and Pinterest for ideas.

Oh and pillows, I have found that's harder then it seems. The other day I looked at TJ Maxx, Target, and Pier One, to name a few and didn't see any that appealed to me.

I think first, you have to decide whether or not you want the tv there. Then we can work on making that wall look good, based upon that decision.

There are plenty of options. I don't think adding wainscoting is a solution.

Mkritt......a little stream of consciousness here.....notice how your thread started with a the topic of a dining room chair and has morphed into so much more. This is typical. People tend to think their issue is an accessory and it turns out it really is functionality.

When a room is set up well and functions, it is partly what brings in the beauty. That has to happen before the little stuff is added.

So, I was looking at your family room and I know you like the current furniture arrangement, as do I. But, it bothers me that the back wall is off. It serves no function and is ignored. Yes, the tv is there, but can only be viewed from one of the couches and the other couch (at least you said) is too far away. (Although, I am not seeing that....but you live there).

So, I think if you are going to put a tv there, you really need to change the furniture arrangement. If you are not going to put a tv there and leave couches facing each other, the area in the back needs to have a purpose. For example, in the bird cage photo above, there is an extra seating area in the back and the beautiful bird cage serves as a back-drop.

So, you could do a lot of things: make it a back drop, add a chair/s, bookcase place a tall desk and chair back there, section off the center part vertically and add some awesome textured wallpaper or stonework to mimic your new fireplace, do a picture wall with art ledges or combo of the above.

Yes, the dining room was really an easy fix..with your help!

The GR is definitely more of a challenge. I do understand what you are saying. The TV really only needs to be viewed from one sofa. It is only husband and me, and when we have company we don't watch it. I can guarantee that I will never be hosting a sports watching party (I don't even watch the Super Bowl for the commercials).

If we leave the TV in there; and I plan to get an answer from husband this weekend, we will definitely need to move it up for better viewing from the facing sofa.

The good news is the rug will work no matter how I arrange it, and it's possible that when I get it, the L-shape will look better to me, but for now I really like this from every angle, the kitchen, the hallway, the sunroom.

I do like the idea of the art ledges, I have alot of beautiful pictures of my dogs that I would like to display (maybe going down that long section next to credenza). The more I think about it, I really like that idea, and it would be interchangeable. Great ideas..as always :) I think it will all come together and I really appreciate all the time you've put into this!!

@dakota28, I like those pillows, and that artwork!

mkritt, do you like the 3/3 chairs in your dining room?

I am thinking your next step (after deciding about tv) is to get a rug. It is a lot easier to match pillows to a rug than vice versa (many more pillow options and easier to return a pillow.

Then you can decide on fabric for your pillows and dr chairs ( if you are going to cover them).

I do like the chairs! I have to tell you, I put that metal chair on the end just to get it out of the way, and I actually like the way it looks. So maybe another one and just have them on the ends. Gives just a touch of the industrial? Hoping to get Tom to lower the curtains this weekend (now that you mentioned that they are bothering me!) I moved the pics that were in the GR to the DR wall for now.

Definite next step will be the rug. Hoping to be that way next weekend.

I am horrible (sorry Aunt Thelma) but I am not a big fan of people photos on the wall. I prefer them in a album. I think I've seen too many googled-eyed babies, 80's mullets, and bad school pictures hanging in people's houses. But so much of the art work I like comes in smaller sizes. Such a great idea you had...natch :)

My Mom was an ameteur photographer. She had great artistic abiility in that area. I didn't appreciate it till I was older.

She never had photos of us in the house. Less is more. Humility.

Small-size art can be put in a large frame with a large mat. Do you like that look?

No, my mom did not develop her own photos. But, she took care with each photo. She was an amazing lady. 12 children and very little $ and took the time to make everything special.

One year, she took a Spring photo of each of us girls. Each was admiring a different flower in her garden. One year, she took a them movie. The theme was "water". She took movies of us squishing our toes in water, rain, etc. It was fun, but artistic at the same time.

Yes, love the Robert Redford black and white. What would Tom think?

One of my sisters put the many photos and slides on cd's. So, I do have them.

I was very fortunate to have really great parents.

It is true: back then people valued time, photos and time spent with others. Now, it is all about the superficial and speediness.

But, not in mkritt's rooms---we will do them with quality no matter the time it takes!

I have a tote full of 8mm film and slides that I plan on doing the same thing to.

Sounds like we were both very fortunate! Definitely a simpler time.

Here's a pic of the dining room with the chair. It looks better in person. Also, when we hung the curtains, I extended the rod so I could put two panels on each side, but it looked way too heavy. So now that I have it back to one on each side, should we bring the rod in a few inches?

Drapes: they need to cover the side molding, so that you see only glass next to the drape.

So, to avoid moving the rod, you could try moving the drapes away from the wall and toward the window. Let's try that first.

Chair: I think it looks too crowded. I liked it better with 3 and 3. If you like the new chair, change them all.

Yes, figured that on the art, but since I'm so good at patching holes, I thought that was a good holding place for them :) I'm also a caulking queen..or so the husband says; probably because he doesn't want to do it!

Drat, guess I can't sneak my chair in there after all haha!

On the drape; do you mean moving it in so that part of the rod shows just to see if it looks better?

I am also a caulk and spackle queen. Requires patience. Leave nails there and try any mirror just to see how you like it.

Drapes. Take the inside of the drape and move it toward the center of the window until it covers the window casing.

So, right now, for example on the left side you see drape, casing, glass. After the correction you will see only drape, glass window.

I took a pic of the drapes moved in; I like them better in a bit, and since we're moving the rod down anyway, easy to move them in (so says the one not doing it).

Now off to clean, thankfully dust and dog hair doesn't show up in my pictures!

Good progress!! I would move them in a touch more, so that you cannot see the casing at all.

Once you've done that, you can decide if you would like to add back you other panels and extend drapes to out more, or if you like just the one panel.

If you like only one panel, then you need to move the ends in a little (actually quite a bit). I like to put the end of the panel (outer portion) over the bracket so that you do not see the bracket.

Mirror: if you use a large mirror, I would think from the angle you took that pic, you should be able to see a reflection of outside. Do you have a larger mirror? You can prop it up on 2 bar-height stools.

That's a great idea for your labs. I get our little Sammy shaved even though he's adorable with long hair (profile pic). He really doesn't shed but always looks scruffy. The worst is Charlie and I am tempted to have him shaved. He's 11 and I've never done it before.

I do like the mirror and there are so many choices available. I also really want a new light in there. Lowe's has a drum one I love.. do you think drum shape would work, I think someone suggested that a while back.

Took shelf down, put other lamp back, hate, hate the TV there! Can picture Robert there haha, or a picture of my dogs blown up..I have some awesome ones of them! Excuse the missing cushions, washing the cushion covers.

Lamps look good.

Need to decide where you want credenza. Currently not centered on anything/not btwn door and window and not under peak. I am thinking it should be one or the other.

My eye is obviously not very good..I thought I had the credenza centered under the beam. I'll go give it another shove or two (as long as my leg reaches that window wall to give me some ummph, I can do it).

Yes I'm thinking Robert, or Tom Selleck, or George Clooney :)

Easy solution: measure from window wall to wall with wainscoting. Divide by 2. That is the center where your peak is.

I'll bet you have 3 pigs. (3 pigs on table and 3 non-pigs on wall......that will work!)

Dog on credenza in front of art, but sort of to the side. ? Or dog on dining room table?

Alas the other pigs I have are two dark wooden ones that the friend gave me. They looked too dark on the coffee table.

Are you talking about the little dog on the credenza or the white one beside it?

I have decided when Tom comes home that I'm going to see if we can move the TV downstairs for now and move the little one from down there into the kitchen to do an experiment on how often we really watch it in there.

I just moved the credenza down, I was off about 8", enough that I had to move my temporary ottomans on the other side..which will actually be nice in the winter when we occasionally use the fireplace. Cosier looking.

I also just brought the little TV upstairs,

My husband loves all these little projects I want him to do..INSERT SARCASM. Well here's #2035

Now there is a big opportunity for something in the window corner.

Pigs could also be painted. What do you think of that?

Hey CDR and Mkritt just got home, very long day at work. Just a thought but if corporations were run by women the world would be far more civilized!

Couple things, I love the idea of the picture rails, perfect idea for a serial redecorator. Mkritt I have already "borrowed" the idea and will be using in my GR. I think if you want to do a large statement piece it should be above the fireplace, I think Robert would be very cozy there. :)

Like the dining room with the minor tweaks. The 3x3 configuration of the chairs looks great and the minor adjustments with the drapes really does make a difference, I would add another panel. I would personally leave the rest as is and not change anything else.

Like the idea of moving the large TV to the sunroom, only because it gives us the chance to work together on another room. :)

CDR, I beg you to find a place for the lamps, I absolutely love them and would hate to see them disappear!!!

OH, also thank you for the tip on shaving the labs, have never considered it, but if it helps with the hair some one is going to get a new "do" this weekend. I vacuum almost every day.

Sorry about your day, Margaret. I understand!

Looking forward to pictures of cathedral wall.

Drapes in dr: I think they would look best now moved down and the second panel added to the outside, so that drapes extend to almost the end of the wall. It will make your room look bigger.

I think we will be able to use those lamps!

Labs: I cannot tell you how much the hair was reduced. I used to vacuum everyday. No more.
Mine get a #7 buzz cut. You'd have to ask with black labs what appropriate buzz # would be. They also dry faster after pool and lake.

Drum table in dr: I think it would have to be very large to carry it off....or have 2 drums. Otherwise, a long, narrow fixture would be best.

Just a thought.....with the tv gone, you could consider something like this with the couch moved back in front of the credenza. They need more furniture in the room.

Otherwise, looking forward to your new pics. I like that config also.

Margaret, I believe women should run everything from corporations to countries! I "retired" from banking when the lobby of the bank I worked at closed. Have no desire to go back to that world again. I hope you have a great weekend.

Well TV moving did not go over well. He (who shall not be named, cos I'm peeved) says he will watch more in winter. I seem to remember that when he did watch TV last winter it was downstairs..just saying

I love that picture.. I could almost have two groupings that way. Well I lost that battle, for now. But I think I can still do the art ledges and maybe that will draw the eye away from the TV. He has said he will hang it (still have what,? 15 days to keep room arranged this way). Fear it's too thick to be framed.

When I had two panels on each side it just looked too heavy to me, but maybe when the rod is lowered a bit it won't look so much so. I am really happy with the little adjustments you had me make; amazing they could make such a difference.

Having trouble with my camera this morning, apparently you can't drop it, have the lens stick open, step on it to fix it, and expect it to work well forever!!

But I thought I would show you a pic of the centerpiece I love (minus the place settings and runners). I have been on a search for the right shutter at every flea market I come across.

AND last but not least I made an appointment with Sammer's groomer to have Charlie shaved. So thank you for that recommendation also :)

drapes: before you move the rod down, you may want to extend the rod and place the other drapes on there to see if you like having both sets on there. That way, when you move the rod down, you will know where to place the bracket (farther out for both sets of drapes) (closer in for one set).

Furniture arrangement in lr: once we see your photo, we can work on that more.

Shutter/centerpiece: That would be really interesting.

The rod is to within 6" to the wall. I bought a long one when I thought I wanted two panels on each side, but I really thought it was too much, so I will be moving it in. I would show you but it is hard to do alone, and I lived with it that way for a month to see if I would grow to like them fuller, but I never did.

I really like this arrangement so I'm going to turn a blind eye to the TV for now and try some of the other ideas you suggested.

I forgot to tell you I found an almost identical rug at Target for 15% off and free shipping. The metal barstools I want are out of stock :(

I'm almost out of painters tape, but I have to go out later today and I'm going to get some and start building some art ledges and pictures on the wall. I just love that idea!! I'll borrow that guy who lives here work camera if mine keeps acting up to show you my mock up when I get it done.

Thanks again for sticking with me.

Yes, I thought I'd put my orange chair there for now. I have an old, old chair up in our shop attic. that I might bring down and see if it works there. My grandpa brought it home for my grandma. She was shocked because he rarely brought her anything. It's horribly uncomfortable (springs) so it might be perfect there since only the cat really would probably sit there.

I think your current dining table and chairs are beautiful. Very traditional. Have you tried putting 4 of them around the walls of the room. this will help set off the attractive wainscoting. Keep 2 at the long ends of the table. Get a very spectacular center piece (although I like the pig very much). Voila! I think the room will look larger and the chairs will be shown off. Cover the seats with a great fabric and the look will be even better.

mkritt, mkritt, mkritt. I am reading the updates and laughing so hard I am snorting.

You know better, you know you need to throw a little something into this for Tom. My advice is tell him you want to create a place in the sunroom for relaxing and watching TV, move the big TV there, let him have a tasteful man chair and let him think it was all his idea. Then tell him how great it would be to have a newer TV in the living room. You both win, you can get a smaller TV, a newer one that does not take up so much space. You know when men get older it is about their TVs, not cars!! My guess is he is secretly planning a new TV purchase anyways. LOL

Hubbie does mow a beautiful lawn and did a great job on the sun room floor. I think he might be a keeper after all.

So, we will work around the tv. Rambling here:

tv's should be treated like a piece of art-----so even though they are not art, I think they should be housed........here are many ideas to cover a tv.
http://www.houzz.com/decorative-tv-covers/p/16

On the other hand, people are used to seeing flat screened tv's now and some feel it is acceptable to just let them sit or hang around.

Another thought......not sure how you do it.....I think you buy a cd....they have them at Best Buy.....when you are not using your tv, it becomes a living piece of art. Examples are a crackling fire, fish swimming, ocean waves. Sound on or off.

So, instead of tv being an eyesore, it could become the focal point of your art wall.

Well CDR the cd is an interesting idea. I would like those ocean waves. I have a feeling that you're right about the tv; it's more me disliking it then anyone else even paying attention to it. I still love Margaret B's framed tv and would love to do that. I not giving up yet!

That's a whole lot of tv cover ideas! Should be interesting. I putzed around today and didn't get out, so tomorrow I'll get the chair down, get my tape, and start pretending.

Happy Birthday Lilly! Issy looks like our little lab Nicki; that's the same face she would have if I put a hat on her haha. Love it and the doggie birthday party. Ty will never have one, he was "that" puppy in puppy class that wanted to take all the other puppies faces off! They were all bouncing around so cute and Ty was Grrrrrrrrrrr.
Then we did an experiment where I wasn't in the room just Tom, and he was fine, even touched noses with a couple of them, but he also wouldn't take treats or do the training because he apparently was depressed I wasn't in there. Mama's boy!

Tom is with our beloved Bailey and Charlie, sleeping on what used to be our patio, now sunroom circa 2006. Ty is growing though, I need to weigh him tonight. Tomorrow is heartworm day for everyone, and I think he's probably in the next pill up now!

Hopefully this will be a constructive weekend decorating-wise or pretend decorating anyway. Also going to see if I can find the metal barstools like Target has. Two for $99.00 might be hard to beat. Maybe Wayfair?

Hope everyone has a great weekend..hoping for rain here!

Hi, everyone.
You have a pretty home, mkritt. Can I have your kitchen?
So, just some thoughts of mine. Since hubby won't go for moving the tv, could you move the love seat in front of the tv, making a viewing area there. You could then put the sofa parallel to the fireplace, and then buy another one of your chairs, and then flank the fireplace on either side with the industrial chairs, and then you could add the pillows and other items. I know you love the chairs, but they just seem too short to go with your dining set-at least to my unprofessional eyeballs. You have the tall chairs, and then the shorter industrial one, and I think it would be the same if you had another one. They just get lost next to the other chairs, IMO.
Also, I love your credenza. The dark wood ties it into your kitchen and dining area. I think it looks rather British Colonial(I'm kind of in love with that style right now, so I'm prejudiced.)
Concerning the shutter. You could buy a new one at Lowes, etc. You could paint it, and then "antique" it by buying this solution that makes the paint "crack," or you could paint it the color of your wall, and then paint over it with the trim color, and then sand off the edges to expose the bottom layer of paint.
Would love to see the photos of your doggies.

Just a thought.....

I was looking at your wall and was thinking that the door on the right is really throwing things off. You might consider framing out the left side of the wall to match the door. Then, you could add a faux door, or depending on what is behind it, add shelving in the new "closet" to house the tv boxes.

I love that credenza (my first Craigslist purchase), and I would love to paint it (did you see Margaret B's?! ) but like you said it does tie everything together. I like the sound of British Colonial :) That's the general consensus by some very talented people on the chairs, and your idea is a great one!

Thank you for the shutter tutorial. I'm having trouble lucking out on finding the right size. Do they have wood ones or would that work with the plastic ones (I could take one off the house, after being on this site, I realize they are too small anyway haha!). Thank you for you imput!

Mkritt, I am stealing the shutter idea and I am going to check our Habitat re-store. I was there a few months ago looking for shutters to put on one wall of my screen porch. They had quite a few wood shutters but none big enough for the porch, but as I recall they would be perfect for your centerpiece idea. I don't think you would get the right look from plastic shutters.

lucindalane....I too do not like the idea of the tv sort of being there, but no furniture facing it.

I mkritt is willing, I think the idea of leaving the couches where they are and then placing a couple of chairs back there might be better. But, just looking at it, I think it might be too crowded to do this. We don't want it looking like a doctor's waiting room.

Situation is not ideal, but design is like life:compromises. We will work with it the best we can.

Okay.....I have one more idea for the furniture (don't know if it will work or fit) (also would bring tv back off center of the peak (which I think is okay....just wanted to see if the other way would work)

What do you think of

-move both love seats facing each other, one under window, one opposite it (so near tv)
-would need smaller credenza, I think....maybe not (one in library?)
-place couch next to fireplace, facing cathedral wall (where one love seat is now)
-2 chairs (maybe you have 2) facing fireplace or orange chair facing fp at angle
-ottomans placed btn the 2 seating groups.

lucindalane, I think, generally, we are talking about the same concept: creating 2 separate vignettes within the room.

With the large size of the room and with 2 separate focal points (tv and fireplace), the room calls for 2 separate seating arrangements. Hopefully, mkritt will be willing to play around with them.

mkritt, if you do back to back sofas, you might want to consider placing the credenza in between sofas and using something more slimline for the tv.

I love the room you posted above and the other back-to-back ideas.

Well, they say great minds think alike. :)
Yes, I was just thinking about how to achieve hubby's tv viewing requirements and also the cozy sitting area, and utilizing the chairs, that our OP wants. I like the idea of back to back seating, myself, because it is a nice way to visually achieve a division. Of course, mkritt is the only one who can judge if its feasible in terms of space.
About the tv, it could be placed on the wall, if that's an option. That would really streamline things. Of course, some people are now putting the tv over the fireplace, but I would think that would have to be something that really would be a big decision because the fireplace surface would have to be altered-unless there is some way to anchor it from the ceiling without attaching it to the brick.

I just got home and forgot the painter's tape while I was out! Going to get stinkin' cute granddaughter Emma tomorrow, so I'll TRY to remember to get it then.

CDR those are two sofas, not loveseats, I do have one matching loveseat that is out in the sunroom right now.

I did some measuring: the sofas are 79", the credenza is 90" x19" From the tv wall to the firepace is 81/2', and I consider the useable space of the room to be 14'W by 18'L. So while the whole area is open, with the walkway going down the hall and the area behind the sofa leading to the sunroom, it is not so big. I don't know if the measurements help any..

Lucindalane, I started looking at the ideas in the back to back; beautiful rooms. I like the room you posted.

But I'm game to try it... I have a bench that I can put in between the sofas to separate them. It's not tall enough or long enough, but it might give us an idea of what it will look like.

Husband is finishing trim in sunroom, so I have to wait for him to go back to his shop... I don't like a human audience haha..the dogs are nonjudgemental!

CDR, I know the shutter idea is on the shabby chic side, but it really appeals to me. I found a shutter at the REstore store for $5 (thanks Margaret B), so I'm going to give it a try.

Okay, take a cue from smart Margaret: "Oh, I know how much you wanted the tv in here and I want to make it special so it is cozy while we watch tv. I am rearranging for the numerous evenings you said you would be spending in front of the tv." (bat eyes).

If you like shutter, try it. Hey, for $5, what can you lose? Besides, I cannot wait to hear comment from the DH. Priceless.

TV above couch: have to crane your neck to see, have to look at light from fp and tv at same time, tv and fp compete for focal point. Not my cup of tea.

CDR, you are so funny and so very practical! Probably one of the most talented designers I have encountered, what I enjoy most is how you listen adjust, refine and adjust again. I have enjoyed this process and have learned so much on this post. I like the term Rustic Chic.

I am not getting the proposed furniture arrangement? Thought we loved the sofas flanking the fireplace and taking the emphasis off the TV?

Thank you so much for not suggesting the TV over the fire place, I personally think that is the fastest way to ruin a room and destroy a beautiful fireplace.

LOL, if I batted my eyes, he would think I had something in them! He's more used to me rolling my eyes at him :)

I have to tell you though, I asked him about putting the tv in the sunroom again, and he just sighed and said "Mary Kay, If you want the tv moved I'll move it, you just have to tell me that you are sure you want it moved and you're not going to change your mind in two days" And of course, all of a sudden I had second thoughts, because I know me, and that's an entirely plausible threat.

It's such a pain that it's not just the tv that has to be moved. All the cables have to be rerouted and the boxes have to have a place to go. Ugh, for now we're leaving it.

Rustic Chic is a very good term and I second what Margaret said about your talent!!

After staring at my room for awhile, I have to agree with Margaret. I am happy with this arrangement. I like the way it looks from every direction in my house and It does put the emphasis on the fireplace. I think when I get the rug and a couple of endtables and lamps, it will really come together. And when and if the tv gets moved it will be just a matter of putting a nice picture there to finish it off.

Mkritt, you are still going to do the picture ledges right? I think CDR came up with the perfect solution for your need to change things up. I am actually considering them for our great room, I see so many possibilities to change things up without nail holes! Also think you can use them to weight the room so to speak, bring the eye down to the picture rails instead of the cathedral ceiling. I have a two story wall in the great room and having the gallery wall has helped detract from the large expanse of empty wall.

Yes, I think the picture ledges are a great idea too. I love your gallery wall (I seriously peek at it all the time). Like I've said before I only like pictures and photos that make me smile and with a gallery wall you can get really eclectic (my favorite word).

That's a wonderful idea, you know you can make the pics very artistic with basic software. I took some pictures of my granddaughter and her horse, used iPhoto and added a sepia finish. They look wonderful, not like I stuck a snapshot on the wall. Also have pics of my dogs, but I am sure you already figured that out.

Lilly refused to cooperate for her birthday photo this evening, you can tell by the pic she was not thrilled.

Room arrangement: what I was trying to say was that, if the tv stays, the arrangement is awkward. But, since ultimate plan is to move tv, then the current arrangement works (esp since you like it). It is a nice arrangement!!

Words: thanks for the kind words, but all of us have contributed to this

Wow, that is unbelievable about your daughter and the photographs. I have never heard anything like that. The photos interspersed on the pictures ledges would be a nice tribute to your daughter. Maybe the ledges could be made deep enough to accomodate the pig.

Reminds me of a joke my Dad used to tell (very dry sense of humor). "Have I ever told you about the "Hog" family? Let's see, there was Ima Hog, Ura Hog, Itsa Hog....." At that point my mother would cut him off and remind him that the joke had been told before.

One final thought before I turn in, I like to frame children's art work for small scale pieces. I use diploma frames from target they come with nice mats. I have some pieces my daughters did as children and a few that my granddaughters have done. I don't have them hanging right now, but when I need some color and a smile I bring them out.

Interesting commentaries! My first thought is run away from the Jackson metal chairs! Run, run, run as fast as you can! The combination makes no sense at all.
It is interesting that you seem to like the gold tone in brass - both the chandelier and curtain rod you have up there are brass. Both of those would have to be nickel in an attempt to make the chairs work..but ;( I truly think the end result be "huh" instead of "wow".
I am a huge fan of woven chairs but if that does not appeal to you give a Parson Chair some thought. They are right around the same price as the Jackson tub chair and really work well around a dining table.Pier One has a really nice one. If you like they sell sleepovers to fit you could get two to make the end chairs stand out and change them occasionally if you want. To make the whole thing look sleek you could rub a gel stain over the table top and have a black table with sleek Parsons chairs. The end result would be in line with the style of your home, fit well within the room and provide the unique custom look you might have been inspired to achieve from the house tour.
Best of luck! Please let me know how it goes.!

As far as the tv, a room does not have to be perfect. We are meant to live in the house and enjoy it and sometimes a tv has to be a part of the decor of a room. It is not meant to be picture perfect if we can't enjoy or live in a house.

Not trying to be snotty. Just saying this above statement because of your statement re how your husband was asking you if for sure you want to move the tv. I thought I got the gist he wanted it to stay and that is why I said the above statement. Perhaps I missed something in the posts but I just don't want you to feel the tv must go if your hubby wants it in the room.

Aw poor Lilly haha...our dogs are so patient with us. She must have thought she was in dog heaven with those special treats!

I use Picassa to play around with my photos. I love the look of a black and white photo with just a hint of color.

@design results..no the curtain rod and chandelier are both nickel...no brass in this house...that makes me shudder to think about :) There is no limit to the choices of dining chairs out there.

@bevballew, I think the statement was more that after 35 years of marriage my husband has learned that I change my mind often and moving a tv these days involves so much more than it used to when you only had the tv to be concerned about. I don't think you were being snotty at all.

CDR you are spot on. I do like this arrangement and for now we will work around the 'elephant in the room'..thankfully it's only a 46" elephant! Could be way worse! I am feeling positive about where all this is going (in no small part, thanks to you!).

Sorry guys, I don't get the TV behind the sofa. Looks strange, with too much on that wall. I would move TV to sun room as Mary, said. You could leave the chest . Paint the vent to blend in. Keep lamps on both ends. Add a big 45" sunburst ck TJMax Home Goods, they had some nice ones. Centered and low. Nothing else. Mary love the insp. room above the pale aqua s and creams are very serene. I would do area rug. In aqua, washed out, may have to go indoor outdoor, with dogs. Do they use this room much? The trick to bring rooms together is keep walls and accent colors the same throughout. I Like dining rm with chairs you had. Still would like to see big end chairs. Would finish that room. Now the sun room?? Your hubby did a good job. Is he going crazy yet? Ha

Like drapes now in dining. Love the idea of blowing up and using your parents photos, very unique, all with a story to tell. Over chest former home of TV, I hope. Use the art rather than sunburst as I suggested above. Would be great. Do you have a Z Galleries? If so may find all you want in pillows. But pricey . But a good place to get ideas. Take pic of things you like on yr phone. Don't agonize over pillows, the easiest thing to change or return. Don't over do them. But, mix it up with shape, color n design. They like a rug is a accent piece. That's all. Like that you want to show off wood floors. Good, so many people want cover them up. Again just a accent to define a area. Nothing more. One last word. Don't be afraid of color it's your friend.

travis, my understanding is that Mkritt plans on eventually moving the tv.

True, if you want a very serene ambience like the one you posted above:
http://st.houzz.com/simgs/cec203e1022f4aad_7-1023/home-design.jpg

art ledges might be better somewhere else. (But I still am not sure exactly what vision you want, so I am just going with the flow). Not saying art ledges wouldn't work in living room, just saying that you will have a different look from your serene dream room.

Jutst an idea: you could move your art ledge idea to the dining room.

Nancy, I have never seen such a long continuous post from you. You must be between jobs! I agree with what you are saying about the rug, aqua would be lovely and not too large.

CDR, looking at the inspiration photo I better understand what you are suggesting. Perhaps if the TV is staying the art ledges are a good idea, kinda of minimizing the effect of the TV. If the TV is moving I still think it will work. I love the large painting over the mantle and still having the art ledges to change things up. Perhaps if the TV is moved the art ledges could be in a serene color with silver frames? I think it was a brilliant solution, don't abandon it.

I like the dining room simple, the table and chairs are wonderful and the drapes just add an understated elegance. I think the place for change would be the table scape, again a defined place for change and the rest of the room can remain a constant.

Whew..busy day with granddaughter Emma, all playdohed out haha!

@travis, I agree, the tv does seem odd there, and I really don't like it very much either. It's so funny after every comment I jump up and run and look at my room again! Yep husband IS going a bit crazy haha, but fortunately he's sort of used to it. I do love the serene, muted colors; just ordered a rug that CDR suggested that is an indoor/outdoor that is a pale green and cream. The dogs are where we are; right now three are asleep at my feet :) Since this space is so open, all the rooms are the same color and have the same window treatment, high five right?? Thank you for your encouragement.

CDR I definitely think that big wall will be a work in progress. I think you're right the art ledge idea would be great in the DR too. Sounds like some good winter projects for me.

Margaret, I have put the shutter on my list of projects for the week. It's a bit shorter than I wanted, but I'm hoping it will work.

Tom and I talked about the barstools I liked. He really hates the metal ones BUT likes the woven ones, so I'm cool with that. Anytime he has an opinion I consider that progress, proves he's really listening..unlike with the "yes dear." :)

Just typing out loud, but wonder if when we get the tv hung up (as promised at month's end) if I could expand on Margarets idea, with instead of a frame, make a picture or photo cover up over the tv that could easily be removed when needed. Time to check out the idea books that CDR showed me.

I think I'm going to play around with rearranging again tomorrow..it has been a few days after all :)

Mkritt, One of the most common cover ups is a picture that is mounted on hinges that will raise above the TV when you do want to use it. Might take a bit more effort than a frame. I looked at that solution too when I was try to hide the TV. It would require some construction, but might be a good compromise,

Joss and Main are showing "industrial" this week. They had an interesting bar stool. It seems it is oak, but painted to look industrial. At first glance, I thought it was metal.....gave me the idea that you could by these and/or paint barstools a silvery gray and get the same look, but not be tied into the expense of metal stools. Just a thought for kitchen and/or dining room.

Tv coverup: I have never done this, but had a thought. You know the canvas wrapped art you ca buy (not frame----canvas is wrapped around the sides as well. Could you not just hang one of those on a tv? Depends on how deep the tv is, I guess.

Well, I tried the room in the L-shape again, just do not like it; plus I have to shift everything off center and it messes with my sense of balance.

So here is what I have for now; the pillows are just some I had to make it look a little bit more finished, brought back the orange chair, and hung my favorite picture in there again for now.

I also decided my shutter was too short soooo I decided to remove a leaf in my table AND I really like it. Remember CDR when you mentioned turning the table? Well I did that too and it fits with the leaf out. I stuck a bench I had in there, but don't care for it. So here are two pictures of the table both ways; what do you think?

I haven't painted the shutter yet and just stuck that plant on there to take the pic :)

Very weird today...I think my floor has dropped; all my curtains appear to be an inch too long!!

I can move them; right now they are exactly centered with the credenza. So try them closer to the fireplace?

While I was taking these pics Ty got a puppy-bug and was racing through the house, he hit that new sunroom floor and went flying. I thought I was going to have to rush him to the vet because he was limping; but he "walked" it out and is fine now. I think I'm going to have to get an area rug for the sunroom..silly puppy!

I think I have retired those other curtains. I hope that the new rug ties it all together! I stuck the tv on a box and painted it black to raise it up a bit for now.

I don't like the dining room table turned as much either, but I do like it back the way it was with a leaf out. Who knew?!

Hi, mkritt. I love the shutter, and like your table turned the original direction.
I have to make one more pitch for the back to back-so, please don't drum me out of the forum. :)
What if you put the couches back to back, but both parellel to the fireplace. Nothing between them, but truly back to back. That way, people can still look over at the tv, or toward the fireplace, or even toward the kitchen. Granted the coffee table can't go between them, but maybe it would still fit in between the fireplace and the couch on the fireplace side. If there are enough people in attendance, they can still all sit on the couches, and converse with each other, kind of like neighbors over a fence.
Okay, I promise that will be my last pitch for the arrangement.

Move the furniture away from the fireplace a bit, let the orange chair peek out a bit when sitting on the opposing couch from the chair.

Lilly and Issy have been playing upstairs downstairs today. Hubby has been working on a new bathroom in the great room upstairs and they have been racing up and down the stairs all day. Last trip Issy skipped the last four steps and went flying into the wall, she was stunned but got up after a few seconds and was on her way after Lilly! Oh, well, you gave it a shot. It seems that your current arrangement is the best-at least for the time being.
My mother was always re-arranging the furniture. My father said it was a good thing that he wasn't a drunk, or he'd never know where the bed was, and would probably land on the floor. They finally came to an agreement that she'd move things seasonally, and he'd help.
I move things around, too, but not like my mom did. I would put things like my bed diagonally, and as my son grew older, he thought that was a waste of space, but I never did it with his stuff, anyway.

Lucinda: hilarious about your Mom and Dad story!

dining room: I did no realize there was a leaf. What I think would look awesome is if you turn the table (the way you don't like it----longways). Then, instead of placing chairs one on each side, place 2 on left, 2 on right. This way, you wlll have a clear shot of your shutter (which DH will shutter when he sees). Also, you will have a clear shot of the view.

Can you try and take a picture?

Other dr comments:

mirror on wall with small pictures and centerpiece is too small.

large papyrus pics looks great togeither on that wall!!

living room: is credenza now centered on peak and couch centered on peak? Can't tell but it looks good. You can try moving couch toward fp. If you do, move it way over to fireplace, so that it looks enough off. If you move it slightly, you will achieve nothing.

other lr comments:

orange pillow on couch looks great with orange chair.

angle orange chair to a 45 degree angle.

remove item that is on credenza.

place dog btwn left lamp and tv, sort of overlapping tv somewhat.

picture above orange chair does not look good. It is a different height from tv and it competes with your centerpiece which is now the tv and lamps.

vent: should I vent about the vent again?

coffee table: you need one very large object like an interesting round tray OR you need 3 objects of varying heights. For example 3 pigs. Whatever you have there now is not looking good.

Making progress!!!!!

Want update on how much DH shutters when he sees shutter. You can then vent and ask him to paint the vent.

My mom and dad both had a great sense of humor. I was very blessed to have two wonderful parents-well, I still have my mom, though my dad is deceased. She's still puttering around at 91, and still can crack all of us up when she is in "entertainment mode." My son's been telling her he's going to make a video of her "entertaining" us and post it on Youtube. It probably would go "viral," as they say.

Just had to add my 2cents worth in here. I opened this discussion up late yesterday while I was working (shhhh, don't tell my boss! ;-) ). Read it from start to finish, and left my computer on last night so I wouldn't lose the site. 1st of all, very sad for your loss...it's the only bad part of having those creatures in our hearts and homes (shedding season notwithstanding!). I read it and was in tears...hard to answer a phone when you're all choked up like that. As I'm typing, I have my "puppy" behind me on the cool floor, and the cat up on the desk pull-out, supervising.

I'm no expert by any means or fashion...and like you consider myself eclectic: I buy what I like, be it at thrift / estate sale or expensive furniture store. I find ways to make the things I like work. They're our houses and as long as we like it, that's the important part, IMHO.

Now on to the rooms....I like the table w/ the leaf (rectangle rather than square) and long side the same direction as the couches, which i like facing each other, coming out from the fireplace. You had 6 chairs in the DR to begin with, what happened to the other 2 in the latest pics? Since you are moving drapes down and in, maybe you could put a chair on either side of that window...or maybe you could put the 2 (get the 2nd one if still available) metal ones there, and use them as "spares" when the whole family comes to visit. That way you can have them but not at the table all the time (I do think they are a bit short for daily use but if you like them you should get them!). Don't know if space allows. They could also be used just as spares in the living room when crowds gather...facing the kitchen, or the TV, or the fireplace.

As for the TV: I like the idea of finding a picture you like and using it as cover up...doesn't hafta be the same size, could be bigger to fit the wall the way it would if the TV wasn't there. Then if/when the TV Does get moved, you still have the pic you like, and no one is the wiser. If you find a pic you like, you can have a "shadow box" style frame used, where it would fit around the TV and rest it on the credenza, leaning against the wall. And if hubbie not happy with that arrangement, maybe it would be incentive to move the TV for you.

I think the rug you picked will look nice, tho not my style. But that's why there's so many stores for all us different opinions to shop at!! Looking forward to more pics...of rooms And pups!!

Lucinda, your mom does sound like a hoot; I want to see that video too!!

CDR, if any paints the vent it will be me haha, I do all the painting in here! He actually likes my shutter, or more likely knows it's in his best interest to like it ;) Haven't painted the shutter yet, and the centerpiece I just placed there to take the picture. I plan to make it larger like my inspiration pic. I'll try the table turned again tomorrow.

So if I move the picture above the orange chair, will the art ledges still work? Someday I will find something I really like (and will hopefully look good) for the coffee table. My best friend and I are always going to some little shop or another, and I'm always on the look out for something that intriques me.

Getting there :)

You are definitely getting there! I am so jealous of how versatile your dining and living rooms are, I have a single configuration that works in our house. Every once in awhile I try to change things up but it never works. Same issue you have, two competing focal points, fireplace and the big ole Sony. Think CDR has had some great ideas, I really like where this has ended up. Have you decided on a rug yet?

@hawaiidreamer, thank you for your condolences, yes I say everytime I lose one of my precious companions "never again, my heart can't take it" but I know that I can give these rescues a wonderful home, so I open up my heart and home again.

The DR table is still rectangle, just a smaller one. I put the extra chairs downstairs, but you're right when I bring the curtains in a bit, they would probably go well in the corners. I just have the one metal one, since I didn't buy the others (but they are still available at a good price on Craiglist...I looked today, because I still love them). But husband doesn't often state his opinion and he did not like them either. And knowing me it won't be long until I make the table longer again! Might be a hassle to always have to put the leaf back in when we need it.

I think the tv cover up might be a good solution too, thanks for seconding it :) Thank you for all your suggestions, I love hearing all the different ideas...especially from fellow dog and cat people :) Now don't get in trouble at work!!!

Yes, the art ledges will still work! It is just that the one piece of art there looks lopsided.

You can find another location for the art you like so much.

For the coffee table, if you want to keep it simple, I would recommend a simple tray that is about 2-3 smaller than your table on both sides. Gold or silver would be best.

Then, you could put nothing there.....or change by season. So, right now you could put a group of pumpkins there (make sure you put some in other places in the room also).

You get the idea.

Nothing wrong with just a stack of 3 large coffee table books stacked neatly. Looks very clean and sleak......maybe dog books.

I can put that art back where I took it from, not happy with what I replaced it with anyway!

Not much a seasonal decorator..even Christmas bah hum bug :) I do like the idea of a simple tray. I like my leaf tray, but it probably could me bigger.

Margaret, it is hard to have two focal points isn't it?! We put that window in there a couple of years ago, and while I welcome the light, part of me thinks it would have been nice to have a solid wall there again to put the tv on. But all in all, I do like the room. I found the rug at Target, it is a twin of the one CDR found at Home Decorators, same size, a bit less expensive, and it was 15% off with free shipping. Should be here next week. I think it will make a big difference, and I still want to find some different small endtables to go on by the sofa closest to the kitchen.

Not crazy about how the dining room table looks with the 4 chairs. Let's see how it looks with 2 on each side like CDR suggested, otherwise, liked it better bigger with the 6 chairs.

I don't think you necessarily have to have tables for the open side of the couches, unless you feel you need them. You could do long, narrow tables or you could do something really interesting like the elephant in your inspiration photo.

I am not sure if these would fit....you'd have to measure...just ideas

side tables

interesting for under window instead of that miniature table that is currently buy chair.

Those are some nice choices. I know there are a lot of trays to choose from out there.

The main reason for some side tables is that I need lighting on that side of the room; l don't like the over head. We still have to replace the ceiling fan. and we haven't decided on a light or a ceiling fan with a light. Either way I would still like a lamp or two next to that sofa to brightened up that side of the room. I'm not opposed to a stand up lamp either, but haven't seen any that I think would look right that don't cost a fortune.

Take a shot head on. You will see that long view of your shutter and into the outside!!

Drapes: humidity is dragging them down. Don't hem them if you are going to lower them.....then you will have to hem again. However, when you do hem, hem them about 1/2' higher than floor.....then will not drag on ground with humidity.

CDR, here's what I'm doing now...have to admit I'm feeling a bit $#%$# about moving the curtain rod down haha!! Darn your good advice :) The husband hung them in a sweet moment...not so sure he would be as thrilled to do it again so it's up to me.

Waiting for my spackling to dry. I never thought about the humidity! Makes sense, because it's only gotten that way around here the last few days.

Lowering drape rod is not a huge deal. I don't think most people will even notice that they are hung a little high. I see a sewing machine. Happy hemming!!

Glad you are considering the table turned. I really like it, but you have to also.

Would love to see shutter painted that pretty blue in the papyrus art.

CDR: to go back a ways in this conversation: where was your family from? My Dad used to tell me about the Hog family too! Always said he "grew up with 'em" in Texas, but funny thing was, they weren't around when we went back to visit...hmmm... ;-)

mkritt: I like the rug too...think it will look good...will definitely make a change. Unfortunately, now I have a new place to shop!! ( I live in a small-ish community, so don't have access to all the "big city" stores most people talk about.)

How about putting those 2 smaller colorful pics one each side the window in the DR, since you'll have wall space with the drapes pulled in. I like the way the colors look from a distance on the left side, but seem kinda small, even with both of them there.

(PS: I work from home, so no boss on site to worry about...hehehe)

Between lowering the rod, patching the old holes (and the old, old holes from before), rehemming the curtains (ugh, mismeasured the first time) it was an all day project. But I am happy with the results, slight as they are (hubby won't even notice). A little dark for pics right now, but probably pretty unnoticeable by most...except eagle eye CDR :))))

Hawaii, I only learned recently that Target had so much to offer online. Home Decorators's has nice stuff too (pricey). Have you ever checked out Wayfair..dangerous :) How nice to work surrounded by your four-legged crew!

Those pics are just in a holding spot for now, unfortunately they're just a little too big to put by the windows. I like quirky, animal related art, so that's the fun part for me.

Ready for the rug, so I can start finding some fun pillows. Hopefully Ty is getting past the grab and run stage.

I'm a Texas girl. I was born in Texas, and I'm still in Texas. Both my mother and father had their roots firmly here, and had no interest in leaving. It's just turned out that I have never had a real opportunity arise to leave.
I've heard about the "Ima" and "Ura" Hogg stories, too, but the truth is that, while Ima was a real person, she had no sisters. Despite her unusual, "hick" name, she was actually a very accomplished and educated lady. There is a nice Wikipedia article about her.
About online stores, I love to browse Pottery Barn, but their stuff is really pricey. When my cousin's daughter got married several years ago, Pottery Barn was one of the places where she had registered and chosen things, so I went out there and found something on her list that my mother and I could, fortunately, afford, ordered it, and had it sent to my cousin, once removed. As mentioned, we live in Texas, and she and her now husband live in San Diego, so we weren't attending. I still love to drool over their stuff, though.

Yes, my Dad would say he grew up with them. As we grew older, we were wise enough to know it wasn't true. We grew up in Kentucky. (must be a southern thing!!)

I did not know there is a real "Ima Hog". Interesting.

I think Pottery Barn is overpriced also on many items. But, as stated, fun to look at and sometimes they have things worth buying.

Oh, so you did lower the drapes? Good for you!.....and hemmed them.

Hubbie will not notice and that just might be a good thing.

That rug is going to make your room come alive. Hope doggies don't like it too much. In my office, my labs have begun to destroy my rug. They are fraying the edges for me. I am considering continuing the fraying down both sides so that it looks sort of like a natural frayed edge. They also have distressed my pine wide plank floors for me for me. They are telling me is it gratis......so kind of them.

mkritt: Yes, most days it IS nice to work from home...but you should see the cat/dog hair i clean out of my keyboard weekly!! (mostly cat since he's On the desk and dog stays on the floor).

Your "rainy day" table pictures are how i was suggesting in my 1st note...guess I wasn't clear. But glad it worked out. I like the idea of picture ledges...i have acquired quite a few pieces i like and not enough wall space to hang them all...ledges mean I could swap when ever i felt like it, no matter the size.

And if you're needing rain (like we are) you're obviously not in Colorado... I feel so bad for those people.

Lucindalane: With as many relatives as i have still in Texas, we could be related....or at lest know some of the same people! ;-)

Margaret: You're right, my Mom was from Ohio and she knew about the Hog family too...so not just a southern "thing".

cdr: Our critters can be sooo generous, with their effort for us, aren't they! My cat brings me furry mice every night while I'm working, and "fluffs" my bedroom carpet about 4am every morning (still has all his claws)! And our Corgi sheds enough undercoat 2 times a year to make a jacket out of it!!

Thanks all for the websites...honestly, by the time i get finished with work, I'm not real anxious to go "surfing" even to shop...but I will make a note of them, so when I AM looking for something, I know what my options are. The Howzz site has actually gotten more of my time than any other site. I love hunting pictures for ideas, and occasionally getting involved in a discussion. Thanks all for letting me "horn in" so late.

Okay....we are nearing completion of the dining room. Can't wait to see mkritt's rainy day project!

Overstock is also a great place for bargains. I know you wanted a drum chandelier. Just one caution: they are trendy right now which to me means in a couple of years they will look "oh so 2013!". However, if you love them, buy them. Just cautioning. Anyway, I saw these on overstock and thought of you. They are so different and not trendy. The one comment says they were too large for a small dining room. However, they are 8", 8.5" and 5" wide. So, if hung close, I don't think they would be too large.

Only caveat, it seems they are separate light fixtures. (unless I am reading wrong)

Anyway, once you get a new light fixture in there, I think that dining room will really start to rock out!

Hawaii, glad you joined..always enjoy hearing ideas! I'm in Missouri, so the rain was greatly appreciated. So sad for CO, Mother Nature doesn't seem to know anything but extremes lately.

My cousin had a Corgi, she was adorable. I wouldn't trade a spotless house..most days...for any of these critters I have in my life. This website is addicting isn't it?!! I love getting ideas from places like Pottery Barn also, and then trying to recreate it a lot more cheaply :)

I've always heard the Ima Hog, Ura Hog story, but had no idea one of them was a real person!

CDR, fortunately the dogs seem to leave rugs alone..I probably just jinxed it. I pointed out the curtains to Hubby, that was an all day project and I wanted some praise haha!!

I really like those lights you picked out, great price too, but I'm going to leave the chandelier for now; this one matches the others throughout the house, and I don't mind it. Not to say that won't change tomorrow :)

I am really liking the table turned this way (I think Tom likes it too), a bigger piece of art for that other side finishing up my centerpiece and I think it's a done deal!! Thank you so much for all the great ideas!

Today, after I surprise my grandson at school for lunch (his birthday), I 'm going to lower and rehem the curtains in the kitchen area. Surely yesterday's "practice" will make this go quicker!!

So, drapes in the kitchen....same thing....they are up against the crown molding? Funny thing is, usually I am telling people to heighten their drapes!

chandelier: yes, you would have to change the other light fixtures, since this one is so different.

Cheapest thing you can do in there now is change the fabric on the seats. With the table turned like that , you will be able to see the fabric on the seats so much better!

I would recommend a mirror on that wall as opposed to more art.

WOW! That looks great. Drapes no longer shoved up against crown molding and I love how you can see clear through the window.

I didn't notice before----is the shutter yellow? That ties in with your art, if so.

Mirror: Yes, I think brushed nickel or silver would tie in with your chandelier and rod. You need something large, though.....something that balances the size of your art. So, doesn't have to be exactly the same size, but something that, for the most part, fills the wall. You don't want it higher than the doorway, though.

So, best to measure the perimeter of your 2 pieces of art together. (So, consider them one piece). Then get something within that range.

The curtains looks so much better, I always felt something wasn't quite right, but just thought I had them too wide. I don't think I ever would have figured out they were just to high without you!

That side measures approx 48' W x 52' H (to door frame).

For other options, would art ledges work there too, seems like you mentioned that before.

Coffee table decor is perfect for you animal theme!!

Yes, I think art ledges would work. You just don't want competition with the art on right side.

So, if you did art ledges and used small frames with large matts, it would be a departure from what is on the right side.

So, you don't want just another piece of art on the left side. It has to be different.

My opionion is your best bet there is a mirror, as that will keep things simple. But.....up to you.

The mirror you place there before was so small, it really did not have an impact.

This room has gone from just a non-descript room I never paid much attention to, to a room I am enjoying looking at. Hey, all.
Yes, Texas is a big place, and its true that I could be rubbing elbows with some of y'all's relatives. My cousin has lived out in Napa, CA, for over thirty years now, but she met a man who was from here who had actually known her parents when they were all younger. So, as the saying goes, it really is a small world.
Isn't it amazing how just a small change can really reinvigorate something? I think a ledge is a great idea, because you can put different stuff on it. Couldn't a small mirror(small enough to fit, that is)be set on it, too, with the other stuff?
About animals, we haven't had a dog in a long time. We had some when we lived in the country-just dogs that adopted us, for the most part. We moved to "the city" when my dad died, and my mother didn't want to have to deal with a dog in the city, but she also thinks that a dog should be able to roam and not be restrained. I have to say that my mother was never one to like animals in the house. My sister was a "cat" person, though she liked dogs, too. We never had a dog in the house, though, like I said, almost all the ones that we had just happened along. We did have a few that were born to our adopted girl doggies. In fact, the last one we had before we moved was one that had been born to "us." My sister named him Sugar Bear, and that was a great name for him. Fortunately, my oldest aunt's husband had a brother that lived in the country still, and he took the dog, so he was able to live a good and happy life running around a new part of the countryside.
We have had some cats in the city. I remember that my sister came home from work one day, opened up her coat, and had this little orange tabby kitten in the coat. My first words were, "Mom is going to kill you." This was back when they had Morris the cat on the cat food advertisement, so my sister named the kitten Morrisa, as it was a girl, and she was the same color. Morrisa had several litters. The last one she had, I named all of them after Gone With the Wind characters. I named one Scarlet because she was always meowing, but thankfully she wasn't saucy like her namesake, but a real sweetheart. She also loved to get on top of the refrigerator-we had a cabinet back then right beside the fridge, so she'd hop on it, and then on the fridge. She seemed to do that because it was warm up there. She'd sit up there like an old hen, according to my mother.
Cats and dogs are so amazing when it comes to having personalities. They really do make a home more homey.

lucindalane, thanks for the animal stories!

That is a great idea about interspersing small mirrors on the ledge with the photos. Something to consider!

mkritt, so left in the dining room is

1) art ledges
2) centerpiece

Not bad....then you are finished. Is the shutter yellow? It appear to be in the photo.

My recommendation for on top of the shutter would be something linear. For example, 3 low vases of flowers in a row. Something like photo, but no candles.

[houzz=

Questions:

Is the shutter yellow?
What height is the chandelier? It appears to high. The bottom of the chandelier s/b 30 " above the table.

Lucinda, it is a small world for sure. Thanks for sharing your animal stories. We live on 9 acres, 100% fenced. I'm a bit opposite of your mother; I don't believe in outdoor only dogs, and have known too many sad stories because of allowing them to run free. But I know that's the norm in the country. Several of ours have been strays that were probably dumped (people p**s me off). I can't imagine life without my four-legged crew.

CDR, I definitely am looking forward to the art ledges. Yes the shutter is yellow antiqued with brown. It actully does look pretty good, so I might leave it that color. I like your centerpiece idea. The chandelier is at 33' right now. I'll have to see if Tom can lower it.

Coming along :)

What do you think of changing the globes in the light fixture in dr.....Home Depot and Lowe's have some that are inexpensive and would add some warmth to the area. I am thinking a warm, earthy tone of yellow or going more green and earthy like your walls.

You could take a look and put one in and see how you like it. Right now, the chandelier is just sort of disappearing.

That's a great idea CDR! I always look at the pendant lights and love the colors. Never thought about changing the globes!

I will post a picture of the rug (I love it) soon; Charlie is sleeping so soundly, I don't have the heart to wake him so I can remove the blanket he's on for a pic :)

Yeh, you can choose a few globes and try them on and we will vote (whether you want us to or not).

We will patiently wait for Prince Charles to finish his nap......unless he has a massage scheduled on the same couch after the nap. haha.

Wow! It really makes the room come alive!

Suggestion---I would either place the back legs on the rug (so move couches toward each other a little) or move the couches away from each other so that the legs are farther off the rug.

It is looking right now like the rug is just a little too small and the only thing you could do is let the back legs hang off.

A pillow on the orange chair with some blue or green in it would be great!

So, what else do you want to do?

-side tables?
-more pillows on the love seats?
-accents need some work

That's an easy fix to push the sofas forward :)

Definitely pillows (going to look on etsy for some fun ones). Would like some side tables for lamps (maybe little round ones?). Accents do need work. A friend and I are going out the Saturday after this one. We plan to go to some of the shops that we been wanting to check out. Hoping to find some good "stuff".

Where should the TV be hung in relation to my lamps? About where it is now (sitting on a box)? Still have to decide if we want a different ceiling fan (husband) or light (me) hanging from the ceiling (above the coffee table now).

End tables: I would not get round. I would buy long, narrow tables that fit the ends of the couches. In a way, it is sort of different that one can walk between the couches and the fp. I love how there is a direct route to the orange chair.

If you buy long narrow table for the fp end, I would keep the couches centered, but move the rug toward the fp, so that the right side of the couches end at the end of the rug and the side tables sit fully on the rug.

I would keep your art wall to the dining room. Now that you are hanging the tv in the lr and with the lamps and the orange chair there, it is going to look too busy with art ledges.

tv: about where you have it is good. You might want to consider hanging a single large starburst type thing in the center of the peak of the ceiling.

Accessories: I suggest taking them all off the tables and putting them in a group and take a picture. We will help you group them and maybe you can use the ones you have. You don't need a lot of stuff, just need to be placed correctly.

Overall, you have too many little things sitting on their own.

Beautiful day here in the Midwest, so I was taking advantage and doing some outside stuff (brownie points with the husband haha).

Should the endtables be wood or glass top, since I have so much wood, or wood but painted?

The only real accessories I'm using right now are the green vase and dog on the credenza, and the leaf tray on the coffee table. The mantle right now is too narrow for them, so I think until the TV is hung I'm going to keep them there. I'm hoping on my trip out with my friend next Saturday that I will find something better for the coffee table :)

So maybe just a large picture above the orange chair? I think that will take the longest to decide on,

I am really, really happy so far. Thank you!

When you say to move the rug towards the fireplace, should I turn it the other direction so that the sofa is all the way on it also?

I think it will work if you simply leave rug in same direction, but move it toward fp, leaving room for side tables.

I think you could go in a lot of directions with the side tables, but I would do something narrow to fit on the ends.

I like that the color echoes the coffee table, yet it is different. Dark tones, but visually light. Will not go out of style.

If you are looking for something unusual, this is not it. But, has staying power.

You seem to like more staying power with your furniture. That is not a bad thing, especially since you are willing to add some unusual accents.

I like that table, too. It's narrow, but has some storage, just in case you needed to stash a few things close by, and they wouldn't be on top. The glass also helps it to give the illusion of not taking up space. So, lot's of pluses, IMO.

Mkritt, I like the table you had pinned! simple, elegant without being gaudy and it would stand the test of time. Please make sure it is safety glass and make sure it is not in a place where it gets in the way of tag with TY and. Charlie. Issy and Lilly get a little wild when we have consecutive days on rain, we nicknamed them thing one and thing two on rainy days.

Fun (but rainy) day looking at different houses on the homes tours. One had lots of orange accents AND the metal chairs, that started this discussion, in the dining room. It was my favorite haha!

kcooz07, I see what you mean; not planning on putting an end table on the couch by the orange chair. I mainly want them to put lamps on for lighting on that side of the room.
But now you have me thinking. New question I guess..will it look all right to only have endtables on that side of the room? Yikes!

side tables:

repeating what I mentioned before, I would move the rug toward the fp, allowing for space to place side tables. Then, go buy a couple of tables (long, narrow) locally and see how you like them (or put you old table there). Then you will feel more confortable ordering something ol

tv wall:

I really would like if you did this: add framing on the left to match the door frame on the right. Then, I don't know what is one the right------a door, no door? But, ideas would be:

-add French doors (if you have French doors to sunroom) to both sides (faux door if necessary on left-they would have mirrored glass)
-add one-light glass mirroed doors on both sides.
-add solid white doors on both sides

You could put a puck light in the top frame of each side (would provide light for reading chair).

Anyway....just a thought.....maybe somebody else has some ideas here.

Hi Ann, this discussion is two rooms in one :) The orange chair and lamps are my favorite things too!

CDR, those sound like great ideas, but I have to pick my battles with the things I know will get done, and I have a feeling that husband would never do it, although I'm pretty good with the miter saw myself haha.

I'm going to be on the hunt for some side tables next Saturday. They're kind of an extra thought that aren't that necessary right now.

I can't get the rooms done too quickly, or it's back to sitting around and eating bonbons :)

Time for CBS Sunday Morning and coffee :)

Morning Mkritt, agree you need to take your time. You finally have a furniture configuration you love and that was half the battle. You have made it several weeks in this configuration, Tom must be completely befuddled right now. The rug looks fabulous too, the colors are just perfect in the room. Do you still plan on mounting the TV and adding the Picture rails? I agree with you the side tables can wait until you find something absolutely perfect and you just get that happy feeling of eau, ahh, I just have to get those. Don't settle just to have tables. Have you thought about putting a garden stool by the orange chair? Tons of options round, square, metallic, colorful, or even the little elephant? I found one at a yard sale attached a pic.

CDR, I like the idea of something unique :)

Margaret, I love that garden stool! I always see them at TJMaxx and Marshalls and love them. I hoping to find some amazing things when my friend and I make a day of it next Saturday. There's lots of consignment shops we are going to check out AND eat at Peiwei which has the most amazing Tofu...yes I'm a freak ha!

I just looked at your TV again, and I just LOVE the way it's framed and that's still what I really would like to do. I still need to remind husband about our "deal" haha.

I have a few ideas for the wall above the orange chair. I think I'll wait until the TV gets mounted, then see what you all think. Unfortunately month of October and November is a busy travel time for Tom (which is why he has to wait on nose surgery, can't fly); so I have to be patient...not my strong suit :)

Oh sorry, I see now the orange chair side table has been discussed recently. Sounds like maybe you are thinking of putting something different there. Garden stools are great but can be a bit short with arm heights of some chairs. They're especially nice with armless chairs. Maybe you will find one tall enough as Margaret did.

Ann, I do have a little table by the orange chair that I just love..$6 at a flea market. I have no idea why I like it so much, but I do. My DIL and I went in Gordman's today. I had totally forgotten about that place. they had an armless chair that looked like my rug I would love to get to replace where I took the orange chair from. A garden stool would look great beside it, thanks for the idea!

Hi Ann! We were mainly discussing the side tables for the couch.

Mkritt, I think you need to think about these things before searching. You seem to like balance and a clean look. I think these questions would help you and the rest of us in your search.

-are the side tables necessary or just an added interesting element?
-so could they be like the elephant in the inspiration photo of do they need to be appropriate height? What is the arm height of couch?
-do you want/need lamps on them?
-do you want 4 or 2? If so, which side?
-if 4, how do you feel about half of the table hanging off the rug?
-if 2, would you be willing to move the rug over to accommodate for tables on one side of couch only?

Hi, took a slight detour today to paint my bathroom.

I do like a clean look :) The only reason I really want/need the side tables would be for lighting on that end of the room. We have some pot lights above, but I don't like them, and other then turning on the kitchen lights, it is really dark on that side of the room at night.

The arm height of the sofas is almost 26". We plan to get a new ceiling fan with a light or just a new light fixture as soon as we can agree on one, but I don't know if I will like that any better then the pot lights.

If it weren't for the lighting issue I would not have anything. I would move the rug any way that it would look best.

Oh, yes, I love the idea in the bathroom. I love when people don't ignore the 5th wall: the ceiling.

Ceiling light: I would recommend if you change the living room light, you eventually change dining room and other lights.......don't have to match.....but they should at least complement one another......or buy living room light to complement existing dr light.

Pottery Barn on sale! 2 and 3 would go together nicely

CDR I really like the idea of an orb like the dumont chandelier. One of the houses we went to yesterday had them, one in the entry and one in the master bedroom. I love them and think that is what I would like there.

All the ones I've seen have been more antiquey (?) looking, so would definitely have to look into replacing the dining room and kitchen, and foyer lights, because they are all the same.
Now that I've typed that, I'm thinking it would be best to find something that matches all the other lighting instead. I wonder if those orbs come in a polished nickel.

I brought the lamp up that looks like the one Ann suggested, but sadly, it didn't look right.

Thank you Travis! I have to say that when I took the leaf out and turned the table, I put the metal chair back on the end...and I love it. So I'm going to go get another one..missed the dang sale recently. I also lowered the curtain rod below the crown molding, great suggestion by CDR. I wish that pictures would show how good {I think} it looks :)

My friend and I are leaving first thing Saturday morning and going to lots of consignment stores and flea markets. One called Good JuJu is only open one weekend a month.
Hoping to find some intriguing "stuff".

Hi,

I do not like the lamps behind the couch. I think they compete with the lamps on the focus wall. They just get in the way and clog up your clean look.

One compromise you could reach with your husband is to get a light kit for the fan. Here are just some ideas. See the colorful ones on the second page. If you do something like this, I would lower the fan. (Actually, I would lower the fan even if you don't get a light kit)
http://www.lampsplus.com/products/fan-light-kits/

Issue: are your other lights brushed nickel and this one is gold?

Another idea you could consider is getting a new fan/light combo that would better coordinate with your other light fixtures (if they are brushed nickel).

I see cdr and kcooz's points about too many lamps set up in a similar way, but I like the idea of the sofa table. What about one lamp on the potential new sofa table and a very different type of lamp? Let me look for Houzz examples.

So, maybe a single short fat lamp as part of a grouping of objects. Or, single floor lamp at the end of the sofa table. Or, arc floor lamp (possibly metal so it wouldn't fight with the current two lamps) with small arc beside the sofa table, kind of going over the sofa and table. I don't love this PB example, but just for discussion sake.

Biggest thing lacking to me in the room right now is drawing the eye up to the peak in the cathedral ceiling. Lowering fan or adding light fixture would fill in that gap.

Also, fireplace needs to be addressed.

I think some type of light (besides ceiling light) is needed in the vicinity of at least one of the sofas. What if you just want to sit or lay on the sofa and read a book? I don't know how that is best accomplished, but adequate lighting adds such warmth to a room.

Ann, I guess they don't use that room much. However, I agree with you that that area needs some light. How about one floor lamp as in your 3rd photo or one short, wide lamp on a console table behind the couch. Notice how in first photo, they used mkritt's talbe lamp and paired it with a clear bubble floor lamp.

Lampsplus has this in 13 colors:
http://www.lampsplus.com/products/empire-red-giclee-shade-arc-floor-lamp__h5361-p2533.html

I think you don't want to block your line of sight to the orange chair. Another idea is that you could buy 2 lamps for each side of the fireplace. Ideas:

-tochiere lamps
-tall, narrow task lighting
-sconces for the wall

Good Morning! Spent a great day yesterday going to all sorts of awesome places. Great place called Good JuJu that is only open on the first weekend of each month. Almost overwhelming with all the things they have. Alas nothing I couldn't live without. Then last night husband and son and DIL went to the 2nd annual October fest in our small town. Fun, can't polka, but fun.

Now this morning I see all these great pictures, websites, and ideas!

Ann, I especially like your first and third pictures. I like that little lamp and the sofa table with the ottomans tucked under it. I also really like that floor lamp.

CDR, that ceiling fan is more of an antique gold, been up there for probably 20+ years. I looked at some of the ceiling light fixtures and had a lightbulb *pun intended* :-) moment. I never even thought about being able to buy a new ceiling fan and then picking out the fixture I wanted!!

I also like your picture with the lamp on the table and the floor lamp. So many ideas now in my head...dangerous haha!

The room definitely needs the warmth of lighting on that side. It's only lighting at night is when we turn the kitchen lights on. Not a cozy feeling. On cold nights when we turn the fireplace on, I would like the room to have that ambience of soft lighting.

I have a whole list of projects to accomplish this week. I am going to paint the fireplace mantle white. I know it's a bit blah right now, on my list of fun searches for Houzz, and Pinterest: and all of everyones great ideas!

Console table behind couch would be perfect spot to put a narrow painted console (maybe something old you pick up that you can paint the color of your lamps). I think that would look awesome.

Are you sure you want to paint your mantle white?
Have you considered the earthy blue/gray that I am seeing in the bricks?
Sort of like this color?

Yes, painting trim is a pain!

If you paint the mantle that blue in the fp, you could add it in pillows or other accents. Paint a piece of drywall or something else you have around first and place it up there and see how you like it.

The chairs you have now are fine. It looks like you like the color Green. I would find a rug with many brilliant colors one being a green that coordinates withe the green walls you currently have In your house. This will anchor the table and chairs. Paint the ceiling a lighter version of the green you paint on the walls. This will add height to the room. You will be able to get away with a dark green on the walls because of the natural light you get in the room. Change the center piece to something that will stand tall to again add height to the room. In regards to the curtains; you know what to do. Hope that helps!

Table between day not the best choice.

I know very little about the room, but here is what I am seeing.

-very inviting room! Love it!
-daybeds appear to me to be built in. What sticks out to me is that it looks like the daybeds were built, but they were too short, so a table was stuck there. Or, that the carpenter built them and he was supposed to but a bridge there for drinks, but he ran out of wood.

In other words, to me it should look more like the table fits. So, I would put there something solid and probably white.

Can you tell me what the table is for? I suppose drinks. Are the daybeds custom?

Good Morning, daybeds are made with cabinets, plywood, and bead board by husband. I wanted something with storage.

I agree with the gap between the beds; the wicker table (going to be painted white) between them is just a filler for now that we put a TV on. We are working on ideas to fill the gap with something different. I have pinned several ideas that are actually like what you've mentioned, more of a solid bridge. Actually whole room is still a work in progress haha! With the exception of the chaise, the other furniture was just what I had.

I don't like the back of the leather chair (it looks too straight to me, if that makes sense) but I will try switching them just to see :)

All in all this room has definitely gone from a walkway to outside to something I love now :)

Okay, I was thinking about your room more. You said the chaise and large chair are just what you had.

So, if possible I would replace the chaise and chair, esp the chair.

They are large and bulky like the beds and really are sort of the same function (big comfy things).

Would you consider 3 of these?

The first thing I noticed in this dining room was the drapes. They are beautiful. However, the drapery rod needs to be made shorter so you don't have all that empty rod on the ends showing. The drapery panel edge should be right beside the finials. I like drapes where you can see the whole window like you have, let's in more light and views!

Hi Julie and Patricia, the rod was only showing because I was explaining that I knew I had made them too wide and wanted to take the pic of the curtain where I wanted it :)

CDRdesign advised that I move them down so the crown molding would show. A few pictures up in this discussion ( I know it's long) show the result and what a difference it did make!

Julie, I've also taken a leaf out and turned the table-CDR advice again- and I am really happy with it.

I also put my Craigslist metal chair find and another one bought from World Market on the ends. I am thrilled with the results that just a few changes I had not thought of helped.

Love houzz and all the people who contribute their ideas!

Wellll, you know how puppies are a bit like children; when they're being too quiet it's best to check and see what the little buggers are up to? The other day I thought Ty was in the sunroom chewing on his toy, he was chewing all right, but on my rug. Just a couple of threads, but that made me put it back in the great room, and put another indoor/outdoor one in there. Probably for the best, because that room gets a lot of traffic and this one will at least hide the tracks better.

Actually happy to have that rug back in the great room; I missed it. Hubby is out of town for the week, but when he comes home I am hoping to get him to hang the TV. And I pinned a site that shows lots of different ideas for framing it. I just love Margaret B's and am bound and determined to do that :)

So still wanting an endtable or two and I saw a floor lamp at Target I thought about trying. http://www.target.com/p/threshold-3-arm-arc-floor-lamp/-/A-14586695#prodSlot=medium_1_1

Here is a combo floor lamp and table. It's rectangular, but narrow. It says the table is 22 3/4" tall-55" with lamp, and the table top is 20" by 14". It's mission style, and has a place on the bottom where you could store items, like magazines(it's flat, though, not vertical so something could be stacked.) http://www.lampsplus.com/products/marville-mission-style-swing-arm-floor-lamp-with-end-table__2t841.html

I love that rug in both sun room and living room, so you can't lose in either. I am wondering if you have thought about Roman Shades (even if just for decorative purposes) for the sunroom. I think it would really draw the eye up and soften all those hard lines at the ceiling. You then maybe could go without a rug in there. The floor is so beautiful. Let it shine.

I like the first photo with simple matchstick Romans and especially the decor in the roofline to draw the eye up.

Lamps: I think an arc lamp would take away from the symmetry and clean lines you have going (especially one with 3 lamps).

Question: Do you want to be able to walk on that inside area of the fireplace between the couch and fireplace?

Question: do you want side tables for all four end seats (2 couches/2 ends)?

Do you want lamps for both couches or just the one near the sunroom end?

Idea 1) Not necessarily these lamps, but ones around this shape, maybe even shorter.

If needing lamps just for sunroom end, I would recommend some low library-type lamps to go on the console behind the couch.
[houzz=Den opens to the Pacific Ocean
[houzz=Living]houzz=Modern Eclectic Living Room by Darbyshire Designs]

Idea 2) Buy 4 very narrow end tables for the ends of the couches. Put lamps on them.

What you can do to get you started thinking and get opinions is to bring back any tables you have in storage and lamps and you will be able to see what is right/wrong with them.

Morning! What you can't see in the sunroom is the cordless Bali blinds on all the windows. We had them custom made, I usually have them down about 10 inches, but every now and then I pop them all the way up.

I was in Target yesterday and looked at that lamp and it is way too tall, but they had another one that I liked and might try. I had a rather narrow table that I put next to the sofa closest to the kitchen, but decided I don't want one there. I also took my round table and two of my dining room chairs (just for examples) and put them under the window next to the fireplace. I really like the way it looks, so I think I may search for some slipper chairs or something similar to try.

Lucinda, thank you for finding that, I'm afraid it might be too big, but I like the idea of it.

I've been praticing putting pictures in here so I'm going to try :) in my next comment to show you a pic I like. I'm afraid I'll lose this if I try here.

I love that sunroom floor too, but it is so slippery and Ty is so long legged that I am afraid he will break a leg jumping off the daybed, so sadly I need a rug in there.

Hello Mkritt, been impossibly busy at work for the past month, finally slowed down. I think the room is gorgeous, the sofa table would look fabulous in your room.
Your sunroom turned out fantastic, such a peaceful place to relax. The new rug really pulls everything together. I would not change a thing, I could just curl up and read a good book on the daybed. Very well done.

Lucinda those are pretty cool rugs, but I think now that I've moved the rug back to the great room, I'm good for now. I really like those pillows! Never thought about Walmart online, thank you for taking the time to show me!

I think you have the right idea with a sofa table that is open on the bottom., so that it doesn't form a big dark blockade behind your couch. On the other hand, it would be kind of nice if it tied in with the tv console.

What do you think about something like this: (Ann showed a few darker ones earlier too)

I like how the spindle leg table would tie in with the lamps. I like the simplicity of the table in the second photo.

Haha, I was outside yesterday (removing two huges rosebushes from the front of the house; they fought back, but my trimmers and I were victorious) and Ty had a blast tearing through the leaves and enjoying the chilly temperature.

Come to think of it, I want a glass of wine an hour earlier too...guess the dogs and I are not so different..I just have more patience..usually :)

Cdr you are lucky with your dogs! Ty eats three times a day right now, being a growing puppy and boy does he know it! I've taught him to go to a corner of the kitchen to wait patiently while I get his food and he must put himself in that corner a dozen times a day haha!

I love both of those sofa tables, and it would be great to put the ottomans under them for extra seating. I have added sofa table to my chalkboard list of items...now I just need that truck back :)

Is your table a counterheight table? Here are the differences. (some vary by a couple of inches).

Pier One sells similar chairs in all heights.

Thanks for the tip, I will have to check it out. Another winged animal is possible haha, but I think I might still go more for my inspiration pic eventually.

Went to WM today to get two more chairs, but they were out of them. A truck comes in Monday so back I will go next week.

Margaret B, husband had nose surgery on Monday to put in the stents so we'll see how it affects his snoring :)

Also bought a new slim line tv for the GR (all hopes dashed now haha). It's thinner but alas also bigger, so when he hangs it still want to try the frame around it, I still love Margaret B's!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!!

There are tv's you can buy that look like mirrors when they are not operating. Also, you can take a regular tv and place a dvd in it that keeps looping the same thing. For example, fish swimming in a fish take……or the ocean waves lapping against a shore.

I would like to comment on the curtains. I personally like them wider, lets in more light and makes the window appear larger. I was thinking if you had a white curtain rod it would match the white trim, Wouldn't be so noticeable. About the chairs, haven't seen them, so don't want to comment.

Is this your dining room inspiration? Note that vase is in contrasting color to shutter, which adds contrast and floral is larger and more airy than yours.

This arrangement does not seem to fit in the direction you are going, but if you like it, that is all that counts.

If you are going to use it, It think a blue vase would be better and your floral arrangement should be larger and airier.

Morning after! Will be glad to get back to my "normal" eating haha!

Husband has a deviated septum which is apparently the cause for his sleep apnea. He is of a healthy weight (give or take 10lbs) but he had a heart attack five years ago (type A personality, stressful job, questionable eating at the meals I didn't control). Cardiologist wanted this done, so hopeful that it will help. But like Ann, I am used to my own space and also have a bit of insomnia at times so, no matter what, I am staying put :)

CDR I do have a blue vase, the centerpiece is definitely going to go through lots of transformation. I'll post a picture next week after I get the other two chairs. I wish I could take better pictures. The fact that I know my room looks better then the camera shows gives me hope when I see a crappy picture of myself :)

Haha mkritt. That is hilarious! Or, another way to put it is what my mother used to say.

"Hey, they worse I look, the better it makes everybody else feel!"

Your dining room looks great. I just think you need to have one focal point for the centerpiece. The animals are interesting enough to stand on their own. Notice how in your inspiration, the floral is the centerpiece with candles accenting the floral.

So, it needs more work, but will get there.

Drum roll please...here is the finished product. Sorry the pictures aren't very good; a dreary rainy, sleety, soon to be snowy evening.

Thinking about adding the leaf back; putting these chairs on each side and getting larger ones for the ends... but I'll keep that to myself for a while so I don't give husband another heart attack :-)

I found some prints I like, so after Christmas I will have them framed to replace the two little pictures on the left.

Love the little train under the tree-my son loved trains as a kid. He still has a soft spot for them. He came home the other day, and I had some Christmas stuff strewn about. On the coffee table was this little plastic train set that looked like it was made out of candy. He picked it up and put it in his pocket, and I just laughed, because that's exactly what I knew he was going to do, since all the train stuff is basically "his" anyway.
If I don't post anything before Christmas, I hope you all have a great one.

Ann, thanks for letting me know about the prints. I just read right over that. I should never reply at night, as I am not as focused as I should be.

Trains: I can't believe I missed that (2 misses in one night!) We bought-scale trains for our boys (garden scale----the large ones). Each year, it was quite an operation setting them up. (Looks easy, but a million tiny parts and electrical connections to set up and then go wrong!).

Now, my oldest son has taken some of them and sets the trains up at his own house. It is wonderful to see that he still enjoys this so much.

As a matter of fact, each year, I write songs (humorous take-offs of real Christmas songs to sing at Christmas.) One song this year will be "Walkin in a G-scale wonderland". The song depicts my son, loving setting up the trains, the trains slowly taking over the house (both visually and audibly) and his wife sort of rolling her eyes-----all exaggerated, but that is part of the fun.

If you are looking for a Christmas activity, my sister started me on this idea, and people love it.

Merry Christmas to all of you!

@trimmings when I originally posted this, I mentioned that I had the curtains moved in to show how they were going to be once again. I thought I would want them wider with more panels but did not. They have since been lowered and the curtain rods moved in. If you scroll up a bit, you will see that I totally changed the chairs; with a few tweaks the room is almost done :-)

Thank you!

Sigh Margaret...I'm hopeless. But I actually discovered my problem with the L-shape before. I don't like just a bit of rug showing on either side of the sofa. Soooo breaking all the decorating rules I got a smaller rug (rather then larger) that is basically just under the coffee table and now I'm happy..no really, it's staying this way..really...maybe..

Wow, that looks great! You finally have your calm blue and white living room. I like the couch gone from the one side. I see the orange chair found a place in the sun room.

The room now has a much more sedate feeling.

No rules about the rug. It really is what you like.

Just curious, what did you do with the circle rug?

Thanks CDR (I like your logo)!

It does feel very peaceful and cottagey like I wanted. I have new white countertops being installed in the kitchen on the 21st so I feel it's all coming together nicely. And it all started with the dining room :-)
Thank you again for all your advice!

The rug is out in sunroom. I moved the heavy leather chair downstairs, and put the loveseat that matches my sofas in there. The orange chair adds a pop of color. It works... for now.

My sister, who is a graphic artist, designed my logo. Thanks! i love the clean lines it has.

So, your living room is more calm an peaceful and your sunroom more lively and fun.....I like that idea! I'll bet your countertops will be lovely!

I love how the orange chair in the sunroom "catches your eye" with the orange-red art above the fireplace.

I know Ann, CDR has a razor sharp eye :-))

I just put my "Charlie" picture up there to temporarily have something, but last night I asked husband if we could hang it because I really like it. Thank for the affirmative CDR; I was afraid it clashed. Do you think it can stand alone, or does it need balance on either side?

I think it can stand alone. Unique.

Now, if you want, you could place a some vases there. If you do, I would prefer to move the art a little to the right and add some really tiny vases to its left......an asymmetrical arrangement.

Okay, this is bizarre....but what about three very small dog bowls.
