Put a rug underneath or get rid of?

My rug is clearly too small for the space! It's of fairly good quality but I can always move it elsewhere. One option is to layer a bigger flat-weave underneath. Or I can get a piece of wool broadloom cut for the space and move the existing rug elsewhere. I found some nice wool remnants that I can have cut and bound. I've received such invaluable advice from you guys before - I'd love to hear what you have to say about this situation!

All you need is front legs of the furniture on the rug to make it look right. If you rotate the rug will it work?

can you turn the rug around?

I'm afraid there's no room to turn it around - very small space. There's a piano and a fireplace at either end.

I would recommend replacing it with another patterned area rug that fits the space rather than using a solid broadloom here. The pattern against the solid sofa & chairs adds interest to this space. And altho you didn't ask, I'd also use a rectangular coffee table instead of the round one. (love your windows!)

Thank you everyone! PH Interiors, I like your idea very much. Do you think my current rug can still be used, if I layer it with something flat? Or should it make its way elsewhere? As for the coffee table, one of these days and I agree!

Hi, I think it would be best to just move it elsewhere. Even if you have another rug under it, this rug with it's pattern will still be a focal point that looks too small. Hopefully you can find another home for it in another room.

I'm driving myself crazy with this issue, to say the very least. Here's another remnant I found, with a bit of pattern. I do have three young kids and a dog and don't want to be having a nervous breakdown about dirt and stains:

I like but it is not as forgiving as a more densely mutli-colored pattern.

The legs of the sofa barely fit on top....

I think it's still too narrow.

Yes, I'm afraid it is too narrow and it's far too expensive for it not to be perfect. A beautiful rug though.

Oh, I'd love some suggestions! I'm about to shoot myself, although I do love to shop.......
