dining/lounge seating& table (s)in small area
hatchnanAugust 31, 2013
Corner of living room is 52 x 68. Need to fit in either dining/multipurpose seating and table or lounge seating with multiple drink tables. Idea is to add some multipurpose lounge/work/dining space in this small corner.
Am I better off to build in an exact "L" shape into the corner or buy free standing sofa/sectional? Am I better off to have one big dining table or multiple small, but tall drink tables to eat off of?

You'd be best off to add some photos of the space for evaluation.

A living room corner that is only 52 x 68" would not hold a dining table and chairs or a sofa/sectional. It would hold a 60" long settee that is 30" deep, with a pair of tiny round tables in front of it.

I would build in the L-shaped seating and use a 48" round table that comes with a couple of leaves to extend to seat 3 along that longer side. You wouldn't be able to use the full length of the bench on the shorter side when using it as a full dining table, but for entertaining, or lounging as you say, it would be great fun!

Photos are really hard to show the space because there is a big furniture piece in the space now. I've attached the best I have (colors will change in the new design). Does that help with further advice?

Is the 52" the part that runs from the corner to the fireplace? Because it looks much smaller than that. If there is a wall, or possibly that fireplace, stopping a full-size table from being used in that corner then, yes, as suggested above, you are better off with one long bench or 2 settees with 2 small tables.

Meant to say "a settee with 2 small tables". I think it's bedtime!

52" is the short side that runs from fireplace to back wall; the 68" runs where the black bar cabinet sits. There is actually more room there, but I run into an unfortunate AC intake vent at 68"!

So if you place a settee or banquette against the wall, centered on the 68", it actually has more than 52" (minus depth of settee) of usable space in front of it for a small table or two?

Yes, only because it is open to the living room, but I don't want to come too far into the living space as it might seem crowded. The challenges of small spaces!

Ballard Design has wonderful sectional seating that are dining height. Best of both worlds.
