Floating Cloud soffit removal

September 4, 2013 in Design Dilemma
One awful design element we just eliminated was this awful soffit the previous owners installed over the island. We assumed they did it because they had to vent the range hood - but discovered it was not vented up through the ceiling at all! Strange.

This really opens up the kitchen. We are doing a drop down stainless/glass hood, fluted pillars on each end, and a couple of pendant lights.

The only issue now is this exposes the large gap between the uppers and the ceiling on the back wall. Can these type of cabinets have extra top molding to finish them better on top? We are going MUCH lighter paint - probably cream color. Crown molding is an expensive option to dress this up - plants etc. above is a given.

Any other suggestions?

Hi ConventGardens, Congrats on your kitchen remodel ! Having "plants, etc. above" is not necessarily a given. :) Leaving it nice, open, and spacious on top is an option...
How about LED lighting above ? :)

Love what you've done so far. I think I agree with Ed regarding plants. A friend of mine has a fair amount of space above her white cabinets, and she simply put some rope lighting on top, although she does have crown molding along top of her cabinets. It looks lovely!

Wow! What an improvement! I'm sending a photo of our molding at the top of our cabinets. Once you add the drop down vent, pendant lights and pillars, you may not feel like you need too much stuff above your cabinets.
