need advice for installing wrought iron balusters

hello, I really want to replace my wood pickets with wrought iron pickets, but looking at the underside of my handrail, there is a metal insert which I believe has screw holes for each picket. I anticipate that when we yank the pickets out, we'll be left with a bunch of protruding screws. Does anyone know how to deal with this?

Pictures would help. It sounds like you could just take the insert out.
