Help! Need help with Family Room decor, lighting and wall color.
September 7, 2013 in Design Dilemma
This is our family/tv/gaming room, need help with wall color ideas, new lighting, wall art, and area rug suggestions. Have to keep only the sofa for now, it is a medium green color, so colors have to somewhat go with sofa. (Main wall color in the rest of the house is HC-170 Stonington Gray, Ben Moore.) Should I go with a light or dark on the walls? There is a moulding 3/4 way up wall. I like the industrial look.

I would start with a wall unit for the TV and other items... that would neaten that entire area and give the eye a resting place. The sofa is over large for the space but I get you have to keep it... I would go with lighter walls... and then a large rug with a bit of the green from the sofa and some of the wall color in the rug.. The walls maybe a golden warm cream.. and then new light colored throw pillows.. just a couple of thoughts..

Thank you Victoria. I didn't think of cream walls, that would work well and flow with the rest of the house. I know the sofa is large, have 3 teenagers, so have to have enough room for the 5 of us on movie night. Once they are out of the house, I will get to do something fun with the furniture. I was also looking to get a wall unit, incorporating a low profile gas fireplace into the wall unit as well, as the room is very cold in the winter.

Any suggestions for a warm cream color? Benjamin Moore color preferred. Has to go well with Stonington Gray.

Love the idea of gas fireplace.. perfect.. 3 teenagers.. bless you.. :-) I live in Mexico so don't have a Benjamin Moore color book etc... but I would go with a WARM gold... cream.. not yellow or blue cream... I am looking to build a wall unit myself.. around a fireplace and tv.. will love to follow your room..

See if you like Sherwin-William's Travertine color......It's warm but not too much.

I think you could use a darker version of stonington gray on the wall with the tv, etc, to make that all disappear. Then use a lighter color on the other walls, so you have some contrast to your sofa. We have stonington gray next to cameo white (a warm cream color), which might look nice with your sofa.

"Love Me Tender" framed print, size medium would look gorgeous, and suit slim wall space :)

With 3 teenagers.. might not be the right art work!! Go to local artists, friends etc.. find original art.. it does not have to be expensive.. and think out of the box for art .. like hanging an iron gate etc.. I noticed you auto plates on the wall... maybe you need more.. like a large wall of plates.. could be really cool..

Hi! Looks like you have a lovely place! Here are a few ideas for you:

If you did the walls a cream color, you could do an area rug like this one that would also go with your couch:

In terms of throw pillows, here are a few that would go with your couch now:

Since you said you liked the industrial look, I have attached some rustic looking mirrors that would look pretty cool above the couch:

Also found this mirror:

I have completed the room, as best I could... as I had to save the couch - for now. I painted the TV wall black and the remainder of the walls Ben Moore - Cloud White. Added some new art that I liked, new area rug and window coverings! Pictures will be posted shortly. Thank you all for your comments. It was an inexpensive makeover.

I have my eye on this one, although I would like a symmetrical one better:

Great job. Very comfy movie night space. Did you ever consider hanging that deer piece over the little window? You already have the large window. Then the other piece could go left of the large window/slider. Would save you the trouble of a window treatment.
