Is backsplash too busy with our counter top?
aradlynSeptember 8, 2013
We need help picking our backsplash. We have a Silas stone counters and white painted cabinets. Our walls are white except for a bluish/ greenish accent wall. We originally thought going with a white subway tile was too boring, but after bringing home some other samples, we are worried that something more exciting will be too busy. Would love some advice! ( the green/blue in the first pic goes really well with the accent wall)

Of your four samples, I like the last one best. If it were my kitchen, I would consider back painted glass: Knight Frank LTD

Or large format tile or stone: Hilltop House | Grand Vista Subdivision

I like that look, but we only have 16" from counter to cabinet. Is that not enough space for the large tile look?

This is an article from a previous backsplash design dilemma. I thought the article was very useful. http://www.mariakillam.com/2010/12/which-backsplash-tile-goes-with-granite.html/

Your counter is gorgeous! I'd use the large format tile (suggested above) and add one of your choices as the accent.

Great article in the link from Ann. Be sure to read it.

aradlyn, with 16 inches from counter to uppers, I would install the tiles vertically. That way you would have only vertical grout lines. It would be a simple, streamlined look, and easier to clean than anything else except back painted glass.

I searched on daltile.com for backsplash tiles in whites, grays, and beiges and large format and found this Colorbody series: http://products.daltile.com/series.cfm?series=130&

Here are three of them next to your counter. Of course, you'd have to see them up close and personal next to the actual counter.

Too busy yes...try a simple subway tile, a darker grey grout to define the pattern.

Out of all pictures, if you really wanted a mosaic, I prefer the second pic. The colours are more muted and far more solid of any of those choices. A natural stone in a grey tone may be far more suited for your application. See attached picture.

I do absolutely adore the charcoal large format option more than anything.
