Should I keep chairs the same or redo?

September 9, 2013 in Design Dilemma
Hi Everyone! I just ran across these chairs on CL today and am going to go and purchase them after work(if they are comfy).

I have a cream colored table similar to the one pictured. My question is do you think I should leave the chairs as is or paint them cream and reupholster them to go with the table. If you have any inspiration photos you could attach, it would be great.

I have seen white tables with wood chairs before and haven't minded the look at all.

Also understand that I know the chairs are small, but I have also seen that before and like that look.

Any constructive advice would always be appreciated! :)

love the chairs. think that you should leave chairs and use material with cream and a woody colour in it.

Do something really unusual with the fabric when you reupholster them. They won't take much so consider some really wonderful expensive remnants. They are unusual so make them really special.

I agree, keep chair color the same- gorgeous! Find a great fabric to re-upholster them with. I would go with a darker wood table, not the white as I think they do look MCM or Scandinavian in style. :)

Not sure about keeping the upholstery color. Can you attach a shot looking down at the seat so we can see fabric better?

I'm thinking its not a vibrant enough color to blend with your other rooms. The color people is right about looking for remnants. You might find something great that has been reduced because of the quantity. Even if you don't find a remnant, there's still not much there. Joanne Fabrics & Hancock Fabrics often have coupons that give nice discounts on any of their fabric, including upholstery fabric. You may find coupons online or sign up for their mailing lists. I'm thinking a bright print with the dark yellow color in it so it sort of matches the wood.

How many chairs are there?

@chrisinky, I actually am on the mailing list of both Hancock and Joanne's. I pretty much live in those stores so I knew they did not have what I needed. So last night I went to Calico Corners. Do you know that store? Anyway I found an ivory silk like remnant with large red, yellow and blue flowers on green stems that almost looks Asian inspired. I redid them last night.

Oh the material was a heavy silk like material. It actually could be silk, I ran in just before they closed so I did not ask what it was. It just caught my eye.

Love it! I would not paint chairs ... just recover as many have already said.

Made me think of this light at West Elm ... it would look awesome above your table & chairs :)

they look like Teak wood chairs ,I would simply polish them with teak oil and give them a new seat cover.those lamps are a perfect compliment to them .

These chairs are very cool and will look great with the table. I would look for some wonderful textured cream colored fabric to tie in with the table, as others have said.

Luv Romantic, you might want to reconsider the lights from West Elm. Someone posted in "other" section of discussions about where on/off switch was. Looked on-line and it says on/off switch is in/line. Where in-line, do you have to climb on a chair to turn them on and off? They are not hard wired. Check and see before you order, they do look cool, though. :)

That's easy to fix ... just leave the pendant light "on" and use a remote switch in the wall.

I'm thinking of a funky, scandinavian fabric with white that would tie the chairs in to the table

Hello, Sounds like you've made the decision to purchase and paint the chairs. Suggest that you not attempt to match the table tones. Let this fabulous table stand on its own! You might consider selecting the paint color after you select the upholstery material. Good luck!

Luv Romantic, I've seen your living room, and this is such a cool combination to go with your style! If you've ever read my posts, you know that I am a mid century modern fanatic. These chairs are amazing!

They deserve era-appropriate fabric. I'm looking at two iconic fabric companies for reupholstering my MCM finds...Maharam and Knoll. Don't do the neighborhood fabric store! These have excellent potential as collectors items if the job is done right! Maharam and Knoll have many price points, and it won't take much fabric to reupholster these.

Great find!

They look very mid century. And they don't look comfortable because of very low backs. But if the are. and you love them. Go for it. I would not paint wood. They look to be in good shape and well made. You might use a fabric chair with high backs on ends of table. Fabric on seats could be change to put some color on them.

Depending on the size of the seat, you possibly could find some Finnish influenced table napkins, to go with your Saarinen table, to use for fabric. Or check out the fabric at IKEA.

Curtains panels are great for recovering chairs too! Cheap and could get all 4 chairs from 1 curtain panel. If you have kids, shower curtains (the fabric water resistant kind...not plastic) might work too.

But on the other hand who cares if some people you dont know criticize your chair? I hope you like it. If not it is fixable. :)
