How do you coordinate rooms with a big open floor plan?
September 10, 2013 in Design Dilemma
My husband and I are building a new home that is due to close in December. I have never decorated, designed, or furnished a home before and am feeling overwhelmed! Our floor plan is very big and open on the first level. We have a huge kitchen (colors are cream and brown)- spilling into a huge morning room and opened to a big "grand room". Since the kitchen, morning room and living room are all open and visible together, I am wondering if I need to keep my colors neutral so everything is coordinated? Specifically with the window treatments, the windows in the morning room are visible with the windows in the living room so I am not sure if they need to match? Kind of makes my options of creativity limited? Any suggestions on how to coordinate all 3 rooms without being too "bland" would be appreicated!

Hi there, your situation does pose some challenges but the flow and casual lifestyle this type of floor plan allows, makes up for it. Here is a space we just finished in Malibu that illustrates a similar floor plan. I suggest keeping things neutral, relying on strong silhouettes to keep things interesting. Consider soft gradations of neutrals with perhaps one larger pattern and coordinates of solids and textures for fabric choices.
