help make space look less 'left-over'

I am planning to use my dining room in some other way - we never used it and the table became a resting ground for everything. We took down 1/2 the wall between kitchen and dining room. this plan shows proposed layout but I need help making the middle section (former DR) less 'left over'. I just realized the pic was cutoff - a revised picture of layout is below -
