Why are so many tv's being put over the fire place ?

New trend. Personally I find that most of those TVs are much to high for viewing, unless you are far away, and unless the fireplace is really low.

It can actually make the tv seem less obvious. One of our tvs is over the fireplace and whilst we didn't design it that way (previous owners did) I do like it. It's nice seeing the fire at the same time and often people come into the room and ask where the tv is since they don't immediately notice it over the fire. Our room is big though and so there is no issue with the viewing angle.

I'd rather have either the TV or fireplace at a corner and have the main seating around on of the two focal points.
