The National Kitchen and Bath Association recommends a minimum of 18" from the center of the toilet to the closest obstacle (cabinet, door etc). So the minimum I would recommend is 36" - 42" to allow ample room to place the toilet and allow for the tissue holder or grab bars if needed. In addition, you may want to verify with your local city, state or municipality to see if there is a code in place which would require a different size.

thanks...would you also elaborate on what would be a comfortable depth for the room, if it has a pocket door, no windows

The minimum I would use is 66". Good luck on your project!
