Beam Ideas

Julie HuntSeptember 17, 2013
Maybe I am a victim of not enough caffeine this morning but I came up with idea that may be a perfect solution or it might be the most cheesy tacky thing ever. Here it goes...
We have a great mid-century house, one of my favorite features are the exposed beams in the living and dining room. Unfortunately the original owners used an unknown paneling system as the ceiling. This paneling system cannot be removed. We would like to do something like this with the exposed ceiling between the beams,

however it is not in our immediate budget however it is on our radar to do something with the ceiling as a temporary economical fix to end the eye sore.
So here is what I came up with... What if we were to apply a faux woodgrain wallpaper. Would that be terribly tacky? I was thinking of something like this,

The beams are dark walnut, I like the idea of two toned to give the beams a pop, I wouldn't want them to disappear into the ceiling. I am also greatly opposed to painting the beams.
I have added photos of the two rooms, they are not decorated, they do not have functional furniture, everything in the pics are going however I do not need room design ideas at this time only beam advice. Please be totally honest with what you think of my ceiling idea and feel free to give any additional ideas to improve the ceiling panels. Thanks!

Cheesy idea, forget the wallpaper and save for the real thing. Your eyes will thank you!
Go for it it will look great
Go back to the drawing board, faux or real wood are both bad ideas

Sorry, just added the the pictures. I brought them up and then forgot to download. Maybe the answer is I need more coffee. My idea is a product of needing more sleep.

I've found them on your personal page. Please don't use wood between the beams. If you want to stick something over that system (it does have an icky color), use something lightly textured and offwhite.

hmm how original of the previous owners lol. I'd just paint them. I do not think the faux or real wood would work well in this situation.

That was a thought I had. Would you use a textured wallpaper?

You could always try it out on one section to see how it looks.... I quite like the idea of the two toned wood ceiling.

The problem with painting is we have a flat roof and I think the panels were used for expansion. We could caulk but eventually the seams would crack giving the same look maybe worse and more of an eyesore.

And I know you don't want to paint, but it does look like quite a low and dark ceiling, so thought I'd show you a pic of a painted ceiling... just for fun ;-)

I do like that. We actually are doing that in the great room with drywall beams. I just really want to keep the natural wood in the other rooms.

But I was actually looking for this when I found the stikwood paneling. Lancko wood panels.

They are not finished yet but I thought I would show them off. We are adding recessed lighting in between the beams.

The beams added so much to the character of the room. The room is an addition and it felt so much like an after thought. The beams made it flow.

Thought so, lovely doors too, should you need them. And I like the 3d structure in the wall panels. Could be an interesting look for your ceiling...? Did you see the stikwood link (westelm) I posted too? Looks like an easy and aesthetically better solution than the wallpaper you were thinking of.
