Should I put a coffee table on my area rug?
Kat

I was contemplating getting one for drinks etc., but I also like the way it looks just by itself. Any suggestions? Thanks.

How about a couple of garden stools instead of a coffee table? That way you can put them closer to the sofa arms, or wherever!

The first thing all the houzzers will tell you is that it's way too small. I suggest keeping the same style but going much bigger. Any coffee table would hide this rug but if you want to highlight it then I suggest hanging it on the wall as art.

Yes, people will say the rug is too small. For me, an eclectic style can handle "too small". :) Examples of too small.

Lydia is right. That rug is usually used at the side of a bed or for a small entrance. You need something larger than that

I agree with Darzy. Not every room needs to be a cookie cutter with large NEUTRAL rug,"front'" sofa legs on the rug and other "rules

Instead of putting a coffee table on your area rug, Why don't you put this rug on top a coffee table?

If you want to see the rug then choose a glass or lucite coffee table. Some bonus accent chairs. The accent rug is much better next to the bed! BTW.....you have a great eclectic style. :)

Next to your bed works great. You can move it closer so that when you get off the bed, you can have your feet on the carpet:)

Believe it or not, if it's clean, I might try it on the back of the couch -like a throw t- o break up the blue, and draw that small brown chair "in" - then do something creative in front of the couch (right now the chair looks small:) fun stuff, isn't it! :D

I like it in either spot - I see a lucite table was already suggested for the living room - That would be my choice if you move it back. CB2 has one.

Kat, you have a great eye for color and form, but the area doesn't look very functional to me. It looks like all you can do here is sit on the futon and stare across the room. No place to put your coffee, only one facing chair for conversation. I like the way it LOOKS; I just don't understand how it's USED.

(OMG, capital letters...I'm turning into abbyjean.)

groveraxle: there is actually a TV mounted on the wall, across from the futon. I also have a bench, a plant and another bookcase to the right of the futon (which you can't see in the pic)...in addition to my African chair to the left of the futon. So in all, there are 3 places to sit, a TV and books to read...

Love the rug next to the bed, agree with printesa, move it a but closer to the bed :)
As for small rugs working in eclectic spaces, they can, but your space is so large, and you would need more furniture to make it work. Try and get the same style rug but bigger! And then you can add a coffee table. Nice bright colours!

Thanks for the explanation, Kat. It makes more sense now. I think a bigger rug will help define the space, and I like Darzy's idea of garden stools instead of a coffee table. If you want to go more eclectic, look for some unusual pieces to use as tables. (I personally have a Senufo bed for a coffee table and a Senufo stool for a side table. Bamileke stools seem to be popular now and are flatter.)

Thanks, groveraxle. I'm just wondering...when I find a bigger rug, should it go longways or the same way I had it before. I'm asking because, if I put it the same way I had it before and it's bigger...then it would look weird if I had it aligned with the couch, but part of it went under my African chair. I guess I'm having difficulty imagining a rug going longways :)

Like others have said. Rug is too small. Room lacks the look of comfort. You are lucky to have large rooms. The rug is great next to the bed but closer as said. A glass coffee table would seem like it was invisible and show off the rug too. The sofa would look cozier with a throw and some great pillows that I feel you can find. Great design sense for things you love.

LB Interiors, any idea how that glass is mounted on the round table?

I agree with those suggesting glass or lucite tables

grover, that is too cool!!! Thanks. I'm actually going to head out tomorrow and check out the store, where I bought my yellow area rug. Good thing about living in the SW, is there are a lot of great places to find beautiful items for the home (and for cheap!)

I think there is a metal attachment from the center. I've seen this design. Not sure how. Maybe someone here knows.

You might want to add some big bold black accessories to the wonderful colors. Nice to see someone who is not afraid of color!

The bigger rug (maybe 8'X10') would look better placed the same way you had the smaller rug. You have plenty of space on both sides for it to line perfectly with the couch. It doesn't matter if the small chair is on the rug or not. You don't even have to put the legs of the couch on the rug. It all depends on the space you have and what's more visually appealing. I find that if you place it the other way the room will look unbalanced. Really like your SW eclectic style! Keep it up and have fun shopping for a rug!

@santoslhauper - The glass on the round table just rests on the base but it does come with clear stoppers. It's from West Elm. http://www.westelm.com/products/cross-spindle-coffee-table-g838/?pkey=ccoffee-side-tables&cm_src=coffee-side-tables||NoFacet-_-NoFacet-_--_-

I love the colour choices. ChOose a transparnt looking table. Doesn't need to be glass top, but definitly not a solid looking one: go for higher and maybe metal with wood, then put it partly on the rug, partly on the wooden floor.

As an art dealer I get very frustrated with people making recommendations to buy CHEAP art. If you are willing to invest in quality furniture, rugs and accent pieces which will only ever LOOSE value over time you should always be looking to buy QUALITY art as an investment. My children over their life time have acquired pieces and now have an investment portfolio of art on their walls that is worth 100x what they paid for it and even in the worst of economic markets ART has never gone down in value.
