First home - kitchen help
September 18, 2013
Hello everyone! We just bought our first home and the kitchen is in dire need of a few updates. I've got a few questions for you all, please help! Please note (we are eventually getting all new appliances, stainless, and the backsplash and tile floor are brand new courtesy of the previous owner and my husband tells me I have to wait to replace that...sigh, so I am trying to pick some things we can progress with over time.

(We are planning on doing a series of grey paints throughout the house) So what color should the kitchen be?

What color should we do the cabinets? (dark, light etc.)

Would you do the island another color? I was thinking about somehow adding a textural element to the island.

Thank you all so much for any advice you can give me!!

This bathroom cabinet is like your kitchen re-done in the Rustoleum Kit in espresso. The floor and counter is similar to yours. Do you like this look? I think the dark would be a nice contrast with your flooring and also complement the backsplash tile accents. Stainless appliances would really be needed as the white would be too stark for the dark cabinets.

Are there canned lights above the island? This could be an opportunity to add a nice chandelier for interest and light above.

Oh yes I forgot to mention that I am 100% adding island lighting so open to suggestions on that. We're in our late 20's and I would say our (slash my) style is a bit rustic chic.

The lighting that is there now is a an awful florescent light...must go.

We have been debating between that same dark expresso color or a white! I'm really open to anything. Seeing it there the dark does go well with the floor and counter, thank you for the visual.

Instead of re-staining the cabinets you could do a reface to give your cabinets a new species and an entirely new updated feel as well as being able to change the profile on your cabinets and even customize it that way.

You could mix up the dark and white for a more contemporary look too.

But, if you paint some white and decide to stain later, you'll have to strip the paint so be sure that is what you'll love a long time. :)
