Is there room for an island?

If those are the dimensions between the existing cabinets, you can subtract 8' from each number in order to determine the largest island you could have. There might be reasons to configure it differently and not use the maximum amount of area, but this should give you the ballpark.

Only if you want to have it in the way. It isn't really configured to put an island in.

Maybe if the peninsula isn't there, but agreed some measurements and a floor plan would be helpful.

I would do a cute rolling island in an accent color. Functional but not so permanent for when you want to open up the kitchen.
