How is the fireplace vented? We have an old wood-burning fireplace that we'd like to replace with a gas insert, but following a top-up reno there doesn't appear to be a logical place to vent it.

This unit is a "direct vent". My recommendation would be to have a properly licensed installer out to your home in order to obtain the proper advice.
