HELP NEEDED: To chose an exterior paint color???
September 18, 2013 in Design Dilemma
In preparation for a new roof, I am having my trim painted. It was a dark green/teal, which had to go. Yesterday the primer went on... a slate blue. I have a cream color I had selected, as well as the slate blue. I did not realize I gave the painter the slate blue primer, and was certainly surprised when I arrived home last evening expecting the cream. Now, I am considering keeping the slate. The roof will be a darker gray with speckles of blue, called slate. My sister is an interior designer, and says the slate blue trim will make my roof appear heavy. This roofing is the part of the close of the process. The entire house had to be tuck pointed due to moisture problems caused by over 50 years with an inappropriate mortar joint application when the house was built. I hated the ugly shaded orangey mottled scratched and shaded brick. As part of the cure for the moisture problem with the double brick wall construction, I chose stucco application to resolve the moisture issue, and chose to use a "old wine" color for the exterior, which is much more appealing to me.

Cream or slate blue for the trim??? Thanks in advance!

New stone sidewalk and porches are almost complete.

Here are two older pictures of the house from last year. One gives a clearer image of the earlier brick color after the tuck pointing was done, and the other shows the old teal/green trim color. From these, you can see more of the progress thus far.

Oh, and one more thing. All of the red brick, including the new porch, will have the "old wine" stucco finish when the work is complete.

I would like to see the wine color. I would probably choose cream and chalk it up to a costly mistake.

Love the way the blue contrasts, keep it. I don't think the cream adds anything. Plus it picks up the grays in the walk.

That slate blue looks great! If you still have the two urn planters in your earlier picture, why not paint those the slate as well and try them on the new platforms on each side of the entry? Might be a little tall, but could be a cool addition.

nwduck, I do still have those urns. The brickwork will be stuccoed the same as the house, and I have planned on some planter of some sort on the platforms.

As for those urns, I had considered painting them the bronze color of the lamps and the wall-mounted mail box color. I had not considered painting them slate blue.

I have a moderately small fountain to install in the round of the sidewalk, and am planning to tint the cement of the fountain so that it has a slate color, too.

Hum... Thanks for the input.

Motownmom, the new roof should be done next week, and the color is called slate, though it is more gray than the paint color.... IF I remember correctly.
