Cover paint on mantel of fireplace.

Fireplace is red brick 8' X 12'4". Problem area is mantel to ceiling: 2'5" X 8'- bad result with paint. How to cover this mess?

Only cover mantle to ceiling, want to save bottom brick.

If you were trying to paint the brick white, you can still accomplish that. It will take several coats to get an opaque white, though. Start with a thick primer to help even out the surface for paint. I would paint all the joints first (several times) and then use a roller with a deep nap to paint the brick faces. Be sure the paint is recommended for masonry. Then, it seems you'd need a mantle to create a break between the top and bottom brick.
