Apparently you can with some effort. http://homeguides.sfgate.com/make-hardwood-floor-look-whitewashed-41471.html. I would like to try this or some other stain but have nowhere to put furniture - or to live during the process

If you're asking regarding sanded or presently "unfinished" material... yes you can.
There are a variety of approaches to take depending on just how "white" you want to go... and how large the area(s) you're considering are...
The specie of your flooring will have an effect on the final outcome...
White oak, for example, is a favorite for whitewashing.
You'd also want to apply a NON-yellowing polyurethane finish after the process... of course.
