We're building in Wilmington NC. Instead of recessing the fireplace, how would it look to recess the side cabinets? Any suggestions?

Hello-Thank you so much for such a nice compliment on this room.
Recessing the bookcases on either side is my preference and the standard. It can look beautiful, providing all is in proportion. To have the fireplace recessed is unconventional, but there was no way around it it this case.
