Fireplace dilemma

izzybgriffSeptember 23, 2013
Just purchased our 1st home- installing new floors, painting all- but am stuck on the fireplace. Should I paint it or perhaps whitewash the grout? Can't do anything structural with it at this point.

I think it looks GREAT, white-washing the grout would freshen up the look. Perhaps replace the fireplace screen?

It would be pretty inexpensive and easy to remove the upper brick and mirror. Maybe replace it with something like this and paint your mantel white to match.

You can also use Rustoleum high heat spray paint on the gold part of your fireplace screen. Here is a before and after of ours that I just recently did.

I like the fireplace the way it is but I would remove the screen. The mirror does date the home a little bit but there is something about it that I like. If you did decide to remove the mirror I would also remove the brick on either side of it too.

Thank you for your suggestions! I love the idea of spray painting the brass screen - will do that ASAP. Since I can't remove the mirror or brick- thinking of framing in the mirror to give it a finished look? It's totally 80s right now :)

What about hanging a mirror on top of the sheet mirror for a more contemporary look.

Framing in the mirror is a great idea!

Chip off all the brick and purchase a fireplace surround kit painted or stained depending on your style but its just too dated and you regret leaving it, I doubt you will ever be happy with painting it or changing the grout. Gut the excess mirror and all the brick, repair the wall, drywall is cheap and pair it, I assume you will paint anyway right. Then hang a big mirror or beautiful painting.

Actually, putting up a new mantle, and even stone decor under it isn't that difficult. There's a lot of videos online where they sell the mantles and stone that show you how to do it. It isn't hard, and it isn't expensive for the dramatic look you get afterwards.

Whitewashed & glazed. Still need new light fixture & paint the brass but I think it's an improvement!

Love Dana Popes idea of hanging something decorative over the mirror. It breaks up the height of the mirror and columns and gives it purpose.

Thank you Dana agree for sure with a decorative item over the mirror - right now it looks a bit "office waiting room" to me. Searching for a great frame or decorative mirror to add dimension.
