I have hired a contractor to do my stairs and there have been so many delays, mostly because the person will work one day and then go - "we don't take down the existing rail, you need to hire someone for that" - then, "we don't paint the risers, you need someone for that" - now, theyre saying they dont stain the wood to a cherry wood. I'm wondering if this is normal or if I'm being taken for a ride here?

What was the agreed upon scope of work in the contract?

I do this kind of work I just replaced a metal railing with a wood one. They should at least demo the existing rail and stain the wood whatever about the painting.

A professional carpenter will definately take care of the demo. A professional carpentry shop will do the demo, bring all parts of your stairs already painted and stained in the shop and ready for installation. Are you sure you did not hire an uninsured handyman instead of a professional carpenter. It seems to me that this person learned how to install some parts of the stairs only and he does not want to be liable for what he cannot or is not equiped to do.
