Pits and scratches in new granite countertop
September 24, 2013 in Design Dilemma
I just had a granite countertop installed (polished santa cecilia). It has a lot of small digs and scratches. If you run a fingernail across it it is not all smooth. This doesn't seem right to me but I'm not sure. I fully expect the fabricator/installer to tell me that it is normal for natural stone. Is it? Thanks.

Very tiny pits are normal in some granites. Larger pits are normally filled and polished to look like part of the polished granite surface. Scratches can occur from dragging one peice of granite over another.

I'm not an expert, but have had 4 different houses with granite and never had any digs or scratches. Doesn't sound normal to me.

When you purchase granite you are getting a 100% natural product and as a stone it is porous. Some stones will have more pores than others but it is not unusual to be able to feel and see them. Upon installation the top should be sealed, but perhaps give it another seal to help close some of those pores. Make sure you seal your granite as well every year so it is not as susceptible to staining
