Can interior wall niches be built in an outside wall?
September 25, 2013 in Design Dilemma
I am renovating my bathroom and would like to have a niche built above the tub. It is an outer wall. Would such a built- in undermine the integrity of the wall? I am speaking in terms of strength as well as insulation... any comments would be greatly appreciated.

You are correct that it would minimize the insulation in that area. You should be able to frame out a niche using a small beam across the top. This beam is called a header and is what is used to frame out windows in walls. For a niche that is between the studs you would not even need a header. You can also thicken the wall on the inside of the room by furring out. This way you can still have an insulated wall . If you can afford to give up some interior space, this would be a good solution.

Are your exterior walls 2x4, 2x6, or block?

Not recommended. The niche would be very cold and would it would also bring in a lot of noise without insulation. Add a second 2x4 wall in front of exterior wall, as you would a plumbing wall, or limit niches to interior walls.
