Would like input to finish gold leaf coffee table

I took an old plain square coffee table made by my brother for his high school shop class in the 1970's and want to dress it up. I have gold leafed the top and replaced the legs. I love the rustic and rough wood covered in the dressy gold. Now I'm trying to decide what to do next. Some thoughts:

Paint legs and edge with black paint - lacquer like finish.
Add a detail to the edge and paint black or gold leaf
Gold leaf the edge and just paint the legs black

Also considering using a tinted shellac to tone down the gold a little.

Would love some feed back.

The current color is actually a paint primer used for metallic treatments - it is a rust color

Since your cabinets are a creamy color, I'd do the legs in the same shade. Also cool would be to add brass leaves on the corners! What do you think?

Hmm interesting idea to lighten the legs. I'll have to give that some thoughts. Funny you mention leaves, that's an element I have all over my house but alas I'm not artistic. I'm terrified to paint art - I'll paint everything is sight but something artistic - yikes. I love simple paintings on gold leafing tho. Here is a link of part of the inspiration:

Keep the legs unobtrusive. I might try crosshatching in black over the top w deep red touches, repeated at the rim. You could also use the gold as background for a (sanded) medallion. You have quite the conversation piece whatever you choose to do, and should keep a camera handy to catch the look on your brother's face upon completion - Best of luck with your project!

Cross hatching - do mean over painting with black lines. Interesting idea. Here is another inspiration for the look I am trying for:

Laurie, I love that link you sent! Cool stuff. What I originally meant was not to paint the leaves, but rather mount them on... something like this: http://bit.ly/185RdjI

Not by painting lines exactly, but by dry-brushing.

Really great idea to keep our brothers table. We refinish and restore constantly. Black and gold is my favorite. How about some thin gold banding around the bottom of the legs for anchoring. The dry brushing with Faux FX Van Dyke brown and Faux cream topped with their varnish or even better the C500 will really make is custom and last forever.
