Does a media console need to be significantly wider than the TV above?

We picked (but didn't order) a great console and a new TV to mount to the wall above. While he was buying the TV, my husband was persuaded to upgrade to a 65 inch. The console we chose will now only be 10cm wider than the TV. Can anyone advise as to whether this configuration will look top-heavy and less pleasing than the more usual wider unit/narrower TV?

It depends on what you have going in the rest of the space. Typically the base should look wider than what is above it. Do you have a photo of the console and/or your space?

Hi - thanks for your responses! Here's the console. I liked the simple lines and colour of the timber. With drawers instead of doors, it will mean leaving a receiver on top of the console to pick up the signal from the remote. Planned to put a basket tray on top of the console and maybe a couple of low decorative items, as there will not be much gap between the monster TV and console.

if they're close in size, it'll look more like 1 cohesive piece of furniture, rather than "oh, it's a table under the tv".
i think it'll look lovely.
