It's a nice looking fireplace. I've seen far worse! I really like the rustic mantle. I think the dark colors in the rug and loveseat and curtains may be what is "overwhelming" you. I'd lighten up elsewhere.

Shrink it up to 6" in the front and bring the sides in to align with the fireplace hole. Put down a stone slab, piece of granite or bluestone. #kraussarchitecture

Get some masonry paint and paint the whole thing white and put in some nice lighter colored marble tiles . A white brick fireplace looks particulary well if you have all the molding, door and window frames in the house painted white as well. I have a similar looking firplace in a very small living area and once I painted it white it looked like a whole new room.

It is an attractive fireplace and I wish you had more pictures of your room from other angles. I suspect that other things in the room such the curtain color and rug color/pattern/placement and the sofa color and placement are contributing to your frustration. The pictures above the fireplace are nice but since they are in similar colors to the stone and somewhat of a blocky look, neither the fireplace nor the pictures show off to their best advantage.

You have a lot of the pink/orangey/salmon color - maybe you would prefer a more off white color for the sofa, rug and curtains...that would also go along with the stone in the fireplace.

How much re-doing are you willing to consider?

It's not. It's your furniture. The shabby chic love seat. Is not working. You could white wash the firepl. That would lighten up room. Red is good in very small amounts. Now red is a color that over powers.

I like the mantel, has a rustic look. I would carry that look into the room. A mirror over firepl. Would help to. Put a big basket on end in a light cream, then fill with firewood. Add silver candlesticks to mantel on one end only. Bring some reflective items into the room. Remove 1/3 of the items in bookcase. De clutter. Get 2 new love seats, in white slip covers, think Crate n Barrel. Can't see whole room. So not sure what else you need.

Add a live seat on each side of firepl. A 24" square small tables on ends. coffee table. In reclaimed wood. End tables one end only.

Echoing travis less red and a mirror will lighten things up tremendously. I really like your fireplace. Not loving the slate tile but its not the worst either.

When hanging mirror or art, hang 6-7" above furn or mantel.
